Fair pointThe big problem is how many of them are described as wonderkids by journalists in the first place. Most of them are nothing of the sort. Even sensible journalists like Ally Gold regularly do it to generate more of a story. It creates an over inflated sense of expectation that the players are highly unlikely to live up to. Veliz was never a 'wonder kid' he was an educated punt. If it works out great if it doesn't we move him on.
You are right to the point that these players need time, but in the same breath, if they are not at the required level and we don't think they'll make it as a first team player, we have to move them on. You can't keep them for 3 or 4 years "just in case". It's not good for the club and it's certainly not good for the player.
