The big problem is how many of them are described as wonderkids by journalists in the first place. Most of them are nothing of the sort. Even sensible journalists like Ally Gold regularly do it to generate more of a story. It creates an over inflated sense of expectation that the players are highly unlikely to live up to. Veliz was never a 'wonder kid' he was an educated punt. If it works out great if it doesn't we move him on.

You are right to the point that these players need time, but in the same breath, if they are not at the required level and we don't think they'll make it as a first team player, we have to move them on. You can't keep them for 3 or 4 years "just in case". It's not good for the club and it's certainly not good for the player.
Fair point 👍

we need to start sending our players to lower level pl clubs if possible, these loans are a waste of time.
In an ideal world of course that would be perfect for us but the reality is that Veliz currently has shown precious little to think he'd get game time even for the three promoted teams. And the same would apply for Lankshear imo (who i really like) , it's too big a risk for a lower PL club fighting to survive - for example if i were looking for a striker to keep me up on a tight budget i'd go and get Danny Ings , miles better (at the moment) than Veliz and i'd pick him over Lankshear if my job depended on it.

Premiership striker loans brings back memories of Fraizer Campbell (shudder). A waste of time for him and us. And Frazier already had a successful Championship loan at Hull under his belt.

Season starts tonight, 2 hours before our kick-off. Should be starting?

Hope he smashes it. Not sure if he'll make it here at current yet, but still only 20 years old and seems that he'll get plenty of chances here in a league that should suit him.

another big hit to the nose. completely accidental, but the poor kid can't catch a break.

Espanyol just starting to get a foothold now. Been a tough first 15 for Veliz to get on the ball. Just been fighting for scraps so far.

Veliz has almost timed a couple of runs well to get on the end of crosses, but very little coming to him to feet or in behind. Espanyol look pretty lightweight and are struggling physically. Look OK when they get it wide on the right, but little else.

HT

Not much to report. One goal saving clearance, a couple of dangerous crosses he nearly got on the end of. Whole side struggling to impose themselves.

Commentator saying he broke his nose. But wouldn't that normally mean you come off? I thought so, but maybe not.

More active second half. A couple of good bits of hold up play and a flicked header on half-way to set up a really good breakaway chance. Looks livelier.

And subbed on 69

Drifted out of the game again after a decent 10 minutes after the break. First game at a new club, but difficult to understand what type of CF he is. Definitely not physically imposing for direct play. Hard to judge his passing range or bringing others into the game as Espanyol found it so hard to get any level of control or possession. They certainly weren't looking for him as a focal point. Probably the best part of his game today was arriving (almost) on time to early crosses. On another day he'd have had two really good chances but was just a beat off.

Not a bad showing, but looks at least a level below what we'd be looking for to force his way into the manager's plans at the minute.
