Bryan Gil mk 2 unless he gets better loans than this.

He's more the kind of speculative signing that you'd see rock up in Portugal IMO, whereas Gil was supposed to be much more than that. Veliz wasn't that expensive but has plenty of potential upside, even if he doesn't quite make it for us. Sell him for £20-25m next summer if he does reasonably well and that'd be good business. If he excels then great, he gets a shot in the big league and could be a massive bargain. Even if he flops, though, we'd probably recoup what he's worth after amortisation & loan fees are taken into account.

Fair point. I just hope he's not like some of our other recent loanees who end up benchwarming and then come back next summer ready for their next loan!

I'm not saying that this was the wrong decision, but I would like some confirmation from the club that they understand we have to field a team in 10 days.

It's all outbound traffic right now.

This loan to Espanyol will give him good experience for next year's loan to Girona ahead of the season after's loan to Getafe.

Needs games. Then we (and probably the club) can decide. A lot can happen, good or bad

we need to start sending our players to lower level pl clubs if possible, these loans are a waste of time.

I am still hopeful for the kid. But he trips over his own feet a lot. If he can figure out his footwork then he could be a class player. It may be a case of him growing into his body still and the coordination that comes with that.

Guy needs to play, for his own sake as well as us in seeing what we actually have.

Hope this doesn't end as a repeat of last season's loan.

In the shop window? What was the point in buying him then? Such a weird transfer. Such a spurs transfer too. ( not digging your comment out btw) just seems odd we’re loooking to put him in shop window where he’s barely kicked a ball for us.

It's really not that weird. Take a punt on a young player to develop. If he realises his potential, we play him and he contributes. If he doesn't, we likely sell him on and he get most our money back. It's a win win.

I think fans really need to get comfortable with the club having this strategy. We will continue to sign young players to develop, some will work, some won't.

Signing players and immediately loaning them out for a couple of seasons for them to gain experience is not uncommon among big clubs. Not every player we sign has to make an impact on the first team immeditately.

Have to say I didn't expect it to be confirmed and announced that quickly. Good luck to him hope he does well.

I may be way off base but my take is that Lankshear's development last season took the club a bit by surprise. With the benefit of hindsight, had we known what sort of season Lankshear was going to have then we probably wouldn't have signed Veliz. But we are where we are and a loan like this is probably the best move for all parties now.

Don’t get the way some think. We complain that we miss out on these ‘wonder kids’ and how much they cost later, but then want to write them off so quickly when they don’t look like prime Messi from the get go.
The big problem is how many of them are described as wonderkids by journalists in the first place. Most of them are nothing of the sort. Even sensible journalists like Ally Gold regularly do it to generate more of a story. It creates an over inflated sense of expectation that the players are highly unlikely to live up to. Veliz was never a 'wonder kid' he was an educated punt. If it works out great if it doesn't we move him on.

You are right to the point that these players need time, but in the same breath, if they are not at the required level and we don't think they'll make it as a first team player, we have to move them on. You can't keep them for 3 or 4 years "just in case". It's not good for the club and it's certainly not good for the player.
