Based on the radio commentary the man of the match has to be Bassong. In fact man of every match. Even ones that haven't been played yet. Actually...man of the match is too puney a title for such a titan of a creature. He's not a man, he's a force of nature that can crush entire teams in the palm of his hand.

perhaps that should be Bassong's new song.

to the tune of that's Amore;

He's not a man, he's a force of nature that can crush entire teams in the palm of his hand, that's Bassong-ie.

what? that fits

A good professional performance. We basically controlled the game from 1st to last minute. In saying that Cheltenham contributed to a decent game and created a couple of great openings that had the played the correct final ball would have rewarded them with a goal

MOM for me was Nico, pretty much controlled the tempo of the game, kept possession and sprayed it around. Thought Pienaar did pretty well too

For me Rose was better than Livermore. Pav apart from 1 great bit of play and his tap in, the less said about his performance the better

Could have been a very tricky afternoon so the boys done triffic

I've read things on this forum where I've convinced myself some people on here have never seen a Spurs game :)

Probably things like 'Modric is shit'

Or things like......

If we can't buy anyone good this window, perhaps keep Gio.

This was Gio's 27th appearance for Spurs but only his third good performance (the others were against Doncaster and Shamrock). Notice anything? He only performs against poor opposition. If only we played the likes of Cheltenham every week?

Cudicini had little to do and did it steadily.

Livermore was surprisingly good at right back. A nice option to have, the ability to play at right back being a key skill for any Spurs player these days.

Dawson had a couple of rusty moments, to be expected, but he was fine. Didn't have much to do, and what he did have to do he was ok with. Harsh booking considering it was him that was fouled.

Bassong looked very good. Some idiot behind me was constantly criticising him but I thought, regardless of the opposition quality, that this was a performance to be proud of and he did himself justice.

Rose was generally ok apart from one moment when their winger outfoxed him. Going forward he contributed even if on occasion it didn't come off. Decent game.

Lennon made a few runs, put in a few crosses and played a couple of lovely passes (one chipped through ball to rose stands out). He didn't exert too much energy but I think the point was to just use the game as a reserve fixture so that he'd be ready to start v Everton.

Pienaar improved towards the end, and he worked hard enough, but he's just so wasteful. I can't believe how many poor choices he makes when passing.

Kranjcar ran the game. His passing was superb, he brought the ball forward, he was always available to receive and he worked bloody hard off the ball too.

Giovani had a very good game, showing pace, skill, vision and determination. He also tracked back very well. I understand Lennon and Bale being ahead of him, but if one of them is out I don't understand why this clearly talented player isn't ever given a go as he clearly has the ingredients in the locker. Shame for him that Defoe stole his goal, but at least he go one later.

Defoe scored Giovani's goal, which was very selfish, but it was moronic for the crowd to boo him. I don't care how harsh it was on Giovani, any striker who doesn't attack that and take ever goal he can is not a real striker. Selfish moment, one of many, but his job is to make sure the ball crosses that line come what may, and that's what he did.

Pavlyuchenko moves a lot, but that first touch is just shocking and he dallies so much. Glad he scored though and he played ok. Never going to be good enough but can't criticise him too much for limitations which he can't actually help.

A nice cameo from Falque. Needs polishing but there's obvious technique and understanding of how to play. I hope we keep him permanently.

Bostock, I'm not sure I remember him getting the ball in his time on the pitch.

Carroll ditto on Falque, even from right back he was getting involved and helping the game forward and he was only on a few minutes.

this comment is very daft.

how many times has he played against anyone good with the first team?

infact how many times has he even played for us in his best position?

Most of those 27 games have been against good opposition, which is why I made my original comment.

He wants to leave and is obviously not committed to Spurs. Even today Harry made the comment:

"He needs to work harder in training and get fit, but then he's up against [Gareth] Bale and [Aaron] Lennon."

Firstly how many of those 27 appearance was he sub for like 10 mins or less,
In his first season he got 5 starts
In his second season he got 2 starts but against preston he got injured after 17mins and he started as our best player iirc
In his third season he got 2 starts and but against arsenal we didn't have much of the ball
This season he has had six starts and in two of those matches were not available to watch

So over 3 and a half years he has started 15 games and six of those came this season

Secondly the europa/cup team this season has been shit because we played 2 up top and the other teams swamped our midfield and even the first team players seemed to play shit

Im not a big gio fan but to say 3 good performances in 27 is crazy when you consider he has only made 15 starts and hardly any with the first team and didn't he play well against shatter in both legs as well as one two other games,

He shouldn't be in the first team but he hasn't had much of chance, defoe continues to play shit with the reserve team(other than one or two goals/moment) but plays well with the first team

Well this is what harry said to the bbc:
"He's got talent, he just needs to work harder in training and get fitter."

"He needs to play and to be fit and train hard, and when he does that, he's got a chance,"

So it seems harry agree he has what it takes but doesn't train hard enough and isn't fit and when you got players like Parker that train like a man on fire you can see why harry doesn't fancy him

Im one of those who thinks there's talent in Gio. I know it was Cheltenham, but the boy has flair when he gets a chance. His goal against the US last year showed that.

There is talent but he's wasted most it while being at Spurs. His game/style of play isnt suited for the PL.

He performs well for Mexico because they play to his strengths and has somewhat of a free role.

He hasnt done himself any good with how he's behaved/acted since he's been at the club.

Nico got 9.5% of the vote on here

I thought I must have been watching another game until I read the match reports and both managers comments

Nico ran the game from 1st to last whistle. Class act

Gio etc did a couple of decent things but one man stood out all afternoon

Gio was more than decent, he was great, but I totally agree with you about Niko, he was far and away our best player (apart from Ekotto, who doesn't even need to play to be man of the match). Niko ran things, his long range passing was incredible, he fought to get possession and he instigated all of our attacking play. Deserves more of a shot and I think he deserves a go in the side next time any of the four creators (Bale, Lennon, VDV, Modric) are out. Right now first in line to come in when one of those is out is Defoe, and granted he is scoring, but Niko is far more likely to allow us to keep our style and rhythm.
