Can't believe people are genuinely discussing SMS tbh. About as unlikely as us signing Messi this window.

Back to Hojbjerg chat?

I'd rather us spend that sort of money on an actual DM like partey than on SMS.

Yep just because he's a great player doesn't mean we need him. We have two potentially fantastic midfielders in Ndombele and Lo Celso already. Reminds me of when Zidane complained when Madrid sold Makelele for Beckham by saying that they had sold the engine to add another coat of paint.

Hard to imagine a more Mourinho midfielder than SMS though tbf.

He's basically Fellaini but with elite technical ability.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but whenever I've watched SMS, he just seems to amble about and not do very much. Never got what people see in him.

Think we would benefit more from a Palacios, Sandro, Wanyama type DM.

If we sign that type we’ll need to sign a new one a season and a half afterwards once they inevitable break down. That playing style is tough and wears you out quickly.

Tottenham will look to address their lack of defensive midfielder by attempting to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton in the summer. Hojbjerg is a genuine ball-winner — no outfielder in the Premier League tops his 10.6 recoveries per game this season — and so he would give Tottenham something they have been lacking. The Athletic understands no agreement has been reached but there is confidence a deal will be struck.

We’re always confident.....

I’m pretty confident here. We’re trying to buy an average player to fill in at a position he doesn’t even actually play, where we desperately need a top class player. This is the kind of deal we’ll definitely find a way to get done.

Out of 246 games, Hojbjerg has played 156 competitive games in his career as a defensive midfielder. This season alone he has averaged more ball recoveries per game than any other player in the league.

Now tell me more bollocks about where he does or does not play?

And im much more confident that we wont find a deal. Levy will find a way somehow to fuck it up. He always does.

the stats sites can decide what position they want to code him at, but watch how Southampton plays and he’s clearly not played in a pure DM role.

they play a completely different style than we do (would have been great to hire haisenhutl instead of Jose) and many of his recovery/interception stats are based more on his role in their pressing game.

im not saying he’s a donkey. He’s a decent player. But it’s another place where we’re going to spend 25-30M on a partial/imperfect solution so we can avoid spending 45M and actually gettIng the full solution.

Great news. The Athletic writers don’t have a clue transfer wise. Means we aren’t in for him.

I think we can be fairly certain that we’re not spending 25-30mil. More likely, this deal will be a trade for KWP, plus a small amount.
Which is why it makes sense.
We’re trading a player we don’t want, for a player who doesn’t want to stay there ( who’s entering the final year of their contract).
Stats suggest said player could help to solve one of our glaring weaknesses ( by if nothing else, being better than Sissoko).
That’s not so bad is it?

I think Hojbjerg will be quality addition in our side. He has been in premier league long enough to understand the physical demand of the league plus he looks natural leader. Also I always rated him higher than someone like soumare or denis zakaria. I think the way we are trying to play under Mourinho will suit Hojbjerg more than Soumare / Zakaria.

Decent player and round peg in a round hole that will improve us. I'll take that after yesterday's shambles.
