Tottenham Hotspur weigh up move for Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

Southampton have told Tottenham Hotspur that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will cost up to £35 million. The Southampton captain has a year left on his contract and wants to move to a bigger club.

Tottenham had hoped that Hojbjerg, 24, would cost about £20 million. Their business will be restricted this summer because of the impact of coronavirus.

They may try to reduce their outlay by offloading players such as Kyle Walker-Peters, Eric Dier, Serge Aurier and Danny Rose. Walker-Peters has played just once on loan at Southampton this season and the south coast club are not interested in making the deal permanent.

I'll be shocked if we sell Dier.

Certainly seems like the most likely transfer at this point but we always know how that goes with Spurs

A small show of appreciation, if I may, for @THFCSPURS19 who showed far more care in spelling Højbjerg correctly in the thread title than did the Times in their article.

A bit wasted on that half of the forum who never learned how to spell Eriksen, but, hey, appreciated all the same.

If we sign him, he'll be only our second ever player to have an Ø in his name after Øyvind Leonhardsen. The great thing about Leo is that we never lost when he scored. The slightly less great thing about him is that, given he only got seven in three years, that wasn't quite as impressive as it might have been.

Anyway, all things considered, I've been a sucker for weird letters in Spurs' players' names since the days of Guðni Bergsson, so count me in for Højbjerg.

...

Player headed into last year of contract. Feels like a Mr Man Plaster being used when proper stitches are needed. This screams fuck about until some other team comes in for him and we're left with budget 'Stambouli' ...

Someone else was probably going to say similar, so I got in early and you can all have at it now ...

From the transfer wishlist thread via @dirtydave

The Mrs has family who go to Saints games a lot and I've been dragged along, kicking and screaming, more than a few times this season (I loved it when we beat them in the replay).
I really like Hojbjerg and think of him as an intelligent deep lying playmaker who has a great engine, an eye for a tackle and a killer pass in him.
For me he's been Saints best player on numerous occasions this season and last and we'd be getting a bargain if we snap the guy up. I believe he is very ambitious and would get better under Mourinho.
I found some stats which seem to agree my opinion, but stats ever tell the whole picture.

Though PEH is not my 1st choice for the DM position, this deal is right up Levy's alley and could be a clever bit of business. I posted this in the transfer wishlist thread as PEH's injury record is nothing short of amazing. He seems to be very resilient and we could do with more players who can last through the season.

Højbjerg signing would be the best signing of the summer for us IMO. Hope we do the deal.
A proper leader , player that can provide the necessary spine in CM.

Evident by the fact that him and Grealish are the youngest captains in the premier league.

Mentioned before that a good mate of mine is a Saints fan and is a reasonable judge of a player and always tries to call it fairly.

He doesn't think he's top quality or the main man for a team with top 4 aspirations.

Which to me kind of sounds like the type of player we need. We really need to start winning that midfield battle again and protecting the defence. An unflashy player who just goes about his job and allows others to play is what we've been crying out for since Dembele's decline and Wanyama's injury.

Get PEH, sign a RB, a LB, a backup striker, the heir to Lloris, a young CB if Mourinho isn't convinced by Foyth, and we are cooking with gas!

Definitely. After the Ndombele signing (which of course still may turn out to be good) it's not always so rosy when things seemingly look so good on paper regarding a player. I find the thought of just a fairly solid proven PL player who may just toughen and tighten us up a bit almost refreshing right now as opposed to some other names being thrown around from players in other leagues.

Right age, right contract situation and also seemingly a very intelligent guy. As a player, he's never stood out to me though. Better defensively than Winks and Sissoko, but I don't really think he's the DM our midfield has been crying out for for the longest time.
