The Spurs legend's description of what happened back then rings true today. Perhaps without realising it, Tottenham Hotspur legend Steve Perryman launched into his version of the events that led to the club's toughest era of the 1970s and the similarities with the current problems for Mauricio Pochettino are striking.

Hardly ever post. But I’ve supported spurs for over fifty five years. It would be madness to get rid of Poch. He’s the best thing to happen to this club in my whole time as a fan. I’ve loved Glenn, Gazza, Hazard, Lennon, Ali, Chivers, Perryman, Greaves. This is a great club and a great tradition. Poch is planning long term in that tradition. I know everyone is disappointed about this season. Christ I bet 20 quid for us to win the league. I never bet. But the fact is this is a long term project and Poch has wrought miracles for this great club. Whatever happens at West Ham or the rest of the season he must be backed. We don’t want to go back to Redknapp and short term fixes. Poch really cares about this club. Of course he makes mistakes but he’s building us a really solid future. Back him!

I don't really see the comparison with the relegation season - MP is an experienced manager who has been with the club a long time while Burkinshaw was inexperienced.
There were injuries to important players back then - this season, Lloris aside, all the key player from last season are still available.
Maybe like then the fans and players alike just thought it couldn't happen to a club like tottenham.

Perhaps Perryman should compare last season to Burkinshaw's last season - both experienced managers. Both sides had an incredible run in europe. But in 84, for me, the spark had gone out the team - it was just a hard working side. We saw incredible football under Burkinshaw but this chapter was ending. And he was moved on.

The great football managers can just turn the page - never satisfied and ruthless. Most clubs just regularly move managers on to freshen things up. MP himself knew last summer was a decision point and this chapter was closing. He seemed like he wanted a new challenge, then nothing happened. The core players marked to leave all stayed. These are unsettled times.

A true legend of the club.

My first Spurs match was that season in Division 2. Burnley at home, 3-0 win and I was hooked. Perryman was someone you could guarantee really cared for the club and would give 100% every match. We could do with him at right back now!
