I mean if it really was only 6 or 7m then I think we would've paid it. As you say, that's really not that much in the grand scheme of things. If Feyenoord really did ask for the silly money that was reported (17m?) then I do think it's not such a simple decision, especially given we'd be paying his ~6m salary on top of that. I think that would be the second most ever paid in compensation for a manager in football history, right?Yeah it really makes me feel better to know that Tottenham couldn't get the Feyenoord manager. I didn't say a few million, I brought up a similar scenario where a manager from Ajax was brought into Manchester United for 3m. I think it would have cost 6 or 7m which is what was reported.
5m for his staff? If he brought 4 staff you think they are all on 1.25m in Holland, as assistants? When have you known buyouts on managers and staff from a smaller league to be so high?
If he wanted to come he would have forced a move anyway and said he can't continue his job and forced Feyenoord's hand, not signed a new deal. Levy never had any real problem paying managers big money to do the job, I don't see why he would be put off by 6 or 7m for Slot because it absolutely wasn't going to be 15m to get him and his assistants out of their contracts. Slot was probably only on a million a year before this new deal.
He turned us down. 2 years ago we had many managers turn us down, Potter for one. We are in a weaker position now. We are a mess and manager's don't want to put their careers in the hands of Levy.
I know it's easy to think "no Dutch team ever charge that much" but Slot's the best thing to happen to Feyenoord in 20 years and they had no obligation to sell him, so I don't think it's unthinkable that they'd ask for a "fuck off" amount to try and drive us away. They'll be able to get a decent pay-out for him regardless down the line, but this buys them some time with the best manager in their modern history.
And then the second Levy showed any hesitancy to pay big money it gave Slot the incentive to say "if they aren't willing to pay big money for me, they can't want me that much" and bide his time, play in the CL and wait for an offer from a more secure club next year.
