Do we even know if the club wants to hire a DOF?

We have so much to do this summer and we’ve not got anyone in or out yet, we had 3 signings wrapped up this time last summer.

We’re going to end up massively short in our rebuild and with players we don’t want.

Really disappointed the DoF has taken this long. Simply too much work for Levy to be overseeing all of this. We have like 10-15 players that need to leave for good, more that need developmental loans, and like 5 incomings.

Trimming the deadwood is just as important this summer as getting the right incomings and we've made no progress in that department

Yep, you can tell we are going to fuck this window up already. Not having a DOF in to sort the transfer dealings out and using agents instead wont go well.

But went on to have our worst season in a long, long time.

I agree we've got a lot of work to do but not much is happening in the market anywhere yet, it's too early. Players are on holiday &/or international duty so actual finalised deals aren't happening every 5 minutes.

I'm a big critic of how we've been run these past 4 years but I'm not panicking just yet. I'll review again once we're on our pre-season tour.

From the clear targets we have heard for each position and quick movement on transfers, you have to think the club are cracking on without a DoF this summer now.

Paratici and the recruitment team were working together for months until he resigned, so imagine they were already pretty clear on a plan for summer by that stage. So far targets looks smart, with a clear plan to fit Ange’s identity too. So if the results are good, DoF by committee for one summer to identify the right target for the next x years is fine by me. No point stressing about it imo.

Remember the season prior finished earlier and the season started earlier due to the World Cup mid year. Also, 2 of the 3 signings were free transfers and we only just appointed a new manager 2 weeks ago.

I think most of the signings will happen later once Postecoglu has had a good look at the squad, but will probably see a GK and possibly a CB and/or Winger before then.

Not sure I’ve ever seen any club come out and tell the world when they are (or aren’t) considering appointing a DOF.

Very few clubs ever really set out the divisions of responsibility of their footballing/recruitment staff either. People just get appointed and we get told their job titles (which have become increasingly opaque) and who they report to.

I doubt many fans even really appreciate the difference between a Dof and a technical or sporting director. Or what each of them does. Or if we even need one given the staff already in place.

At the moment, Many seem to think we need a DOF who comes in as a transfer guru and just chooses his own players, and large ignor existing recruitment staff. Maybe this is due to how Paratici came across but in reality his views on players will have been formed through working with the recruitment staff at Juve and bring that knowledge with him.

if you have a reliable Chief Scout, capable of being promoted to Head of Recruitment - as we seem to have - plus an experienced administration/finance guy - As we have / will have in 8 days, Then the need for a DOF is greatly reduced.

I think a lot of people see a DOF as a magical position that simply takes football matters away from Levy.

But Levy appeared to still get involved while Paratici was here. We hired Comolli who was at odds with Jol, a head coach who had been doing a very good job before the DOF didn't provide him with what he needed.

We clearly need to improve our scouting system and we need to get everyone working together. A DOF isn't a magic wand to provide that.

Hire the right person, great. But there are other job titles that can provide the same.

Hire the right person, great. But there are other job titles that can provide the same.

Personally, I prefer the idea of having Munns being in charge of (1) a Head of Senior Recruitment, and (2) a Head of Academy recruitment (who each have their own scouting teams)

It mitigates the risk of one person having too much power across the whole club and making bad decisions that take years to undo.

He can also “project manager” and bring consistency of approach across all areas. He seems well qualified to do this.

there should perhaps also be one extra role created/given to someone specifically- Head of Manager/Head Coach recruitment - Who is constantly monitoring managers around the world and maintaining an ongoing target list.

Broadly agree - especially with the amalgamation of roles within the club but it was made so public our desire to replace Paratici and via media/journalistic outlets that the radio silence right now is deafening.

I've come round to the idea of a committee approach with Munn, Ange, Gabbannini and perhaps Steinsson but would have expected this to be relayed to us one way or another as the club goes through an organisation overhaul.
