It's a sad indictment of what football has become, but really it's only a reflection of the world we live in. It's the logical end point of a society in which avarice trumps moral considerations. Everything is for sale to the highest bidder. Football is a particularly visible example of this and is often cited as having no moral scruples - but really we find it wherever we look, be it in big business or international relations.

I don’t know why folks are worrying, as Levy says spending money doesn’t correlate with success. If they do start winning things it will be a coincidence just like Man City and Chelsea.

That sounds like it might be paraphrasing. Were those his exact words? I'm not a so-called BsoDL but I thought that it was something along the lines of 'it doesn't necessarily guarantee success '.

I remember him saying you have to spend smart.

Of course there's a correlation between money spent and success, if it weren't we wouldn't have a situation where the six clubs with largest revenue streams were odds on to finish as the top six every season. There is absolutely no coincidence that City and Chelsea started winning titles when they spent more money than everyone else.

What is true is that spending money doesn't guarantee success, and money has to be spent smartly. If you don't spend smartly you end up like Man United for most of the last seven years, massively underperforming because they just throw money around without a plan of how to fit players into a team. We don't know how well Newcastle will spend, or even if they can spend big without falling foul of FFP rules if they aren't relaxed due to the virus situation. What we know is that an influx of cash will give them a huge advantage compared with the Ashley reign.

Typical their best ever season and chance of going up to the championship could be ruined. Hopefully the new owners have enough cash to keep them going.
Massive digression: I was born there and first started going to the ground when Martin O'Neill was still boss and they went up from the Conference to Division Two with two promotions on the bounce. Moving abroad made it easier to follow Spurs (dad's team) so that's the way it went, but I've always followed their results. This season has been fantastic and the new owner appears to be a solid guy.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with Newcastle but I'm happy to discuss all things lower league in appropriate threads.

News at the weekend that Newcastle will have to abide by FFP. So that will have significant impact on money they can spend. Certainly wont be able to do a Man City or Chelsea and spend £100's of millions on the team.

I'm sure they will find some loop holes to navigate their way to raising and spending bucket loads. UEFA's FFP will be seriously challenged by City and their lawyers over the coming months, for which i suspect other rich owners are watching very closely.

he says or maintains there is little correlation between spending and winning. Couldn’t see anything about spending smart. He re-emphasises it later in the minutes when asks if competing means spending lots of money and again says there is no correlation between the two. He just says it’s about making the right decision which is pretty vague.

The outrage against the league and football as a hole over this would probably be a lot louder if there was no virus. This virus is probably why the PL will approve this and do so as quietly as possible. They want the money a whole lot more than they dont want any shit. They’ll turn their back on the new owner directly ordering the murder and dismemberment of a journalist a fucking consulate, and being involved in the many transgressions of that country. Shit. MBS makes the the sheikh’s in Manchester look like golden childs. Yet somehow he’s an important ally to most of the west which is why you dont see your government having anything to say

Thing is - and I have no time for that regime but if the UK government can do weapons deals with them then it's difficult to apply different morals to football surely. It's all morally dodgy of course and perhaps that smacks of whataboutism but it just seems to me that it's hard to expect football to police morals when the government is willing to turn a blind eye. As I said previously though, give me ENIC every time.

I hate it. Just pure jealousy as I know I would have a very different opinion if it was us. Ultimately it will make the league harder and even getting into the champions league more challenging.

How would we feel if this was us? I get why Geordies are excited. A takeover like this is basically the only hope they have of becoming the big club they think they are.

But at what cost?

Personally, I don't think I'd want anything to do with a club used to sportswash a human rights hellhole like Saudi Arabia. Easier said than done though, and the fans don't have much say in any of this.

I’ve been thinking about this over the last couple of days and I would say that I would support a local team (Plymouth Arglye or Truro City for me) Of course I’d keep an eye out for our results but the love would be gone.

I'm the opposite, I say bring it on and I relish the increased challenge if this a) happens, and b) they do have money to spend. But then my default is that you can always turn around disadvantages (particularly in football, which is so narrow minded in it's thinking and how it short term and reactively operates) so if I had a say in it I'd just be thinking there is one more money club to embarrass and show up.
