Call me a cynic, because I am but I doubt this is the end of the story
Apparently Ashley is now in talks with the American guy so if he puts his money where his mouth is (and he passes the test) then they could still have a new owner by the start of the season.

Ah but American owners in the PL are normally the inverse of Saudi ones!

Liverpool have had the bad and the good. If Newcastle are in luck, he would be more John Henry than Gillette and Hicks.

I'm not fully convinced that Henry is that much better than G&H - simply luckier.
Klopp could be considered a stroke of luck, but it was basically selling Coutinho and re-investing that money that took them from competing for the EL places to winning titles. Granted that takes strong leadership, but the line is very thin. G&H had them finishing in the top 4 (2nd once) and in CL final.

I've always thought that really as long as someone came in with a strategy that unlike, Ashley is more than just making it through from season to season then that alone would be an improvement. People can criticise DL and most of us have to a greater or lesser degree but he has had a vision that is sadly lacking with Ashley.

If it was down to talent alone, fair enough. But he's got a nasty streak and although in the past I've wanted him too, for me that outweighs the positives.

I think Levy will have a soft spot for him and can be the mentor or father figure his life has always lacked.

Wouldn’t surprise me if there wasn’t an attempt to take control of Sheffield United by proxy. Though they may just move on to an easier target, perhaps a club down in the championship where the scrutiny won’t be so intense. Lots of sleeping giants down there, some of them bigger clubs than Newcastle United.

I think they'll face to same problems, i.e. that English football doesn't want to be associated with human rights abusers and murderers. Man City got away with it but that deal was done before anyone got a proper heads up. Fit and proper took on a different meaning after that (at least I hope it did).

If Staveley is that gutted then maybe she should talk to the American guy and form a consortium with him.

What a shame for Staveley. Oh well, she can go back to suing Barclays for the £1.5b she claims she is owed.

So the Saudis had to pay Ashley £17m for the privilege to bid. Knowing him, I wouldn't be surprised if he strung them long to get that fee out of them!
