I was inspired by fridgemagnet's comment (17 Jan - 10pm) on coming up with songs for the new stadium. Specially for games against West Ham, the following to be sung to the tune of You'll Never Walk Alone :-
When you walk through the doors of your grand new home
Don’t… be afraid of the empty seats
At the end of the day, you don’t pay your way
It’s just sweet, silver freebie from the Gov

Jog on through the game
Jog on down the Prem
Your dreams, like your bubbles will burst

Jog on, jog on
Championship’s where you belong
And you’ll never win the Prem
You’ll never win… the Prem

Jog on, jog on
The Championship’s where you belong
And you’ll never win the Prem
You’ll never win the Prem

Very good, but I am not sure this should be the signature line of a song we sing until we have won it ourselves!!!

Hoping for some significant progress this week with the steel work around top of south stand

I need to find the images of the finished article again. I see the South stand and it appears to be flatter than the East & West stands. It may be an optical illusion or camera angle but as it currently stands (no pun intended) there would be 2 massive blind spots where the lower South stand meets the 2 adjoining stands...

I agree the junctions of the south stand with the West and East stands look very odd to me

It’s basically a bolt on stand. Never been a fan on how it joins personally but hopefully the positives will be good enough to forget it

Just need to look at the still photo on the last page to see it doesn’t quite work well. Also on the visuals on the same page this area has been conveniently put into shadow. It doesn’t look as if there will even be seats there, but maybe it’s an illusion. If designed well it could even look like a feature or we could use spammer style tarpaulin!

I must say, I have always cited the join between the South Stand and the East & West as the one area the stadium looks poorly designed. I wrote a long post on it quite some time ago that I can't be bothered to dredge up but my concerns were basically:
  • The camber is different between this stand and the tiers next to it. This means that the East and West don't have a contiguous circle/ bowl, but instead butt up against a small wall. It reminds me of the horribly designed main stand at Chelsea.
  • The upper tiers then overhang. This makes sense, again, as a result of the single tier design of the South and the angles also make sense in terms of sight lines, but it looks a little 'jaunty' at best and 'awkward and poorly planned' at worst.
  • The South Stand still has a huge walkway round the middle of it, which I gather is for access and disabled areas. I think the first is necessary and the second laudable, as disabled fans all too often have little choice over where they can sit, however, it compromises the 'single tier' nature of the stand in my eyes.
I'd like to have seen an outcome which involves the East and West stands almost 'sweeping' into the south stand. With a fade between the two. However, it is likely that one or a combination of the following factors would have prevented this:
  • No time to design something that complex.
  • No time to build something that complex.
  • No space to fit something that complex into the space available (perhaps it would have compromised the footprint or shape of the stadium).
  • The (possible) reduction in capacity as a result of doing this may have been intolerably high.
  • No one even thought of it.
  • The simple fact (as an extension of the second point) that the south stand was intended to be a quicker and cheaper build, as a result of timelines, meant that the fact it was being built in steel and the other parts of the stadium were concrete, necessitated a clear distinction between the two stadium parts and this fit neatly in with it.
Looking at the picture, I am near certain sightlines will not be a problem. If the East and West didn't cut up the way they do at the top then it would be, but the angle suggests there will be a clear pitch view. In addition, the bottom half of the South will be higher up than the East and West as it is steeper, so that looks safe too. The one thing which won't be visible to those right next to the South in the East and West lower will be the screens at the back, so people sat there will have to hope the screens at the other end are large enough to be easily viewable for replays etc.

I think a lot of how it has been designed was necessary, either based on time, materials or cost. But it seems a shame to me that a more elegant solution couldn't be found.
