If we sign Matic, I for one do not believe it would be anything more than a rotation option. However I believe the most important aspect of this signing if it were to happen would not necessarily be his talent on the pitch, His leadership and experience, his understanding of Mourinho. Those could well be what takes us that way, maybe José would hope his mentality rubs off on some of the other guys.

Carrick, busquets, pirlo, xavi, Barry, Fernandinho, Jorginho, Casemiro, veratti, de Rossi, Mourinho hell even Rodri and Frenkie De Jong aren't that quick.

Should that be Moutinho? Or are you over-appreciating his short and underwhelming career as a player?

Can he be any worse than Dier or Wanyama at least as a short term option? We’re getting desperate imo.

Its truly ridiculous how many holes this squad has, I'm at the point I actually may consider this fucking guy. Wouldn't be happy with him next season but damn might not be worse than what we currently have.

Its not surprising really, weve known about it atleast for 18 months, we have a great first 11 players, maybe stretch that to 13/14 players, but we dont have a balanced squad. Thing is i agree with your point for a quick fix aslong as Matic is not injured and not lost it, then he would plug a glaring hole we have, weve never filled it since Dembele tbf

Liverpool already looking like they've got 1 target locked up. What are the chances we've even picked out who we want to try for?

What, do you think this is some sort of retirement home for fucked up defensive midfielders?

Watching him play for United today and he’s league’s ahead of anyone we have in that position. Not a long term solution obviously, but if we want to have any chance in competing for top 4, the FA Cup, and UCL we need a DM. Don’t think anyone else will be realistically available in January.

If there’s one transfer I can see happening in January it’s him coming in but only if the fee is reasonable.

This is going to happen isn't it. Thought it was pretty telling Mourinho didn't start Dier even though he didn't start against Brighton. Levy probably reluctant to splash out on a 31 year old with no sell on value although we did bring in Llorente. Utd rumoured to want £15m so no doubt Levy will low ball towards the end of the window with his contract expiring in the summer.

Personally not something I'd like us to do but can see Mourinho wanting it as I doubt Levy is going to cough up big money for a younger, up and coming option in January.

Of course it’d be better if Levy went out and paid for a big talent like Zakaria, Partey, Camavinga, Soumaré, or Gerson but two decades of history indicate that’s pretty unlikely. So if it’s Matic or nothing, give me Matic. Our current options are tragic.

We did sign two of the best U23 midfielders like 4-5 months ago tbf.

I agree and he was identified as a Mourinho target when he joined us. We paid £12 million for Llorente and put him on a fat contract so there’s definitely evidence levy will spend that kind of money on an aging player if the manager wants him.

No temporary fixes for me. Far too much dead wood in this squad already without adding to it.

Swapping him for wanyama would be ok, if we could get a buyer for big Vic of course. I suspect actually, wanyama going would be the only way we’d end up signing Matic. Like you say, we don’t want to have too many older players on the squad.

But we need a DM and if the manager wants him then Levy has to go for it. We should try for proven PL quality and beyond him I’m not sure anyone will be available in January.

I suspect we will sit on our hands though as per usual.

There in is the problem, I don't see Vic being sold if his knee is as bad as it seems it is. We're both level headed enough to know Levy won't want to have money sat in the reserves doing nothing.

Perhaps this is what people will wait to see this 'yes' man shit I keep seeing.

Mourinho has never been a yes man. People are dreaming if they think he will stand for Levy’s nonsense. He’ll be publicly vocal about not being backed. The anti Mourinho brigade will love that as they’ll be able to say he’s being like he was at Man U where the chairman didn’t back him.
