Unless he has a desperate desire to play under Poch again I can't see this happening

... I absolutely do but I feel that will take time to find one suited to the PL and for them to settle, a couple of windows of good scouting at least. if we want a CL quality one now it's 30 million plus. I'd go with MS now to sure up the midfield and then put the scouting network to work to find that hidden gem.

I understand the notion and I don't think it's a poor idea, but I do think we could find a needed playmaker for considerably less. If we're talking CL quality, I'm sure we could pick up Cabaye for under 20 mil. If we really just need a quality playmaker, not necessarily proven CL quality but still can add that bit of difference, we could spend even less while still significantly improving upon a weakness.

....great call, Cabaye is for me the best answer *if* available. I'd even take him over MS and go with the midfield we currently have pushing reserve funds into WF and a striker to compete with Kane given its seems Soldado sadly is done.

Based on what we know of Wenger, if he had the choice between Cabaye and MS then I would far more expect him to go for Cabaye. I mean, this is the man that is trying to turn Arteta into a holding midfielder.

Clearly I'm saying this because I still really want us to get Morgan but I am realistic enough to realise how unlikely it is now.

It would be interesting to see Schnederlins stats compared to Mason. I don't we actually need MS, I rather we allow Bentaleb and Mason more time to develop, bring Carroll back and see Velkovic.

I think all our best youngsters are not quite ready to be the main the guy and we lack a little bit of quality in that most important of areas as a result

I also think they could learn a lot from a top level CM which would benefit them in the long run (as with King and Naybet)

Whether or not MS is that guy I don't know - but I certainly think we should get someone in with the type of quality to run our midfield and teach our youngsters the finer points of playing there

How much did we actually bid for Schniederlin? I read somewhere it was £12 million which would explain why we didn't get him... Southampton wanted Townsend surely we could have done a player plus cash and not paid for Stambouli our buying policy just seems weird to me as this guy was obviously worth £20 million in the current market..

Not just current market, but also factoring in the values they got for others like Lovren and Lallana. They were always going to be charging probably north of market value.

I actually think now that they have proven capable of adapting after losing players, they will be a lot more open to selling him in the summer. Not now though.

While I do doubt this deal is possible due to the money side of things, if we ever wanted to convince him Spurs is a better place for him than Arsenal, now is a good time to do it! :D

I think one of Morgan, Cabaye or Rabiot would be enough for me this window, plus maybe a couple of good youngsters eg Ponce.

I think the Chelsea result may have made this signing more likely as it was a real sign Poch has us going in the right direction and may lead to him getting some extra backing

Southampton would be mad to sell to us now. Think we can safely assume this won't happen this window.

I think this would have been possible if Soton had slid down the table by now but they're still right in contention and we're direct competitors - they'd be crazy to sell to us now. Might be better to switch targets to Cabaye or somebody.

The reports at the time, if memory serves wasn't so much about the size of our bid it was the valuation the saints put on him. After selling Lallana, Lovren etc Schneiderlin was the line in the sand as far as the board and fans were concerned - I seem to remember Southampton saying no one else would be sold in the summer.

The reports were it would have taken an obscene bid to get him (£30m+). The issue was that whilst he is arguably a £20m player is it worth paying over £30m (I think the reports were closer to £35m but I really cant remember) for a £20m player.

I think we would have paid £20-25m for him but felt (rightly in my opinion) that over £30m was too much.

The fans reaction to the chambers sale was when the line in the sand was drawn. IIRC trix said we agreed a fee of £18m before the world cup then soton put the price up to £24m
