2020 Dele? You sure? Dele would struggle to get into most teams in the top 8, because he is the optimum of a luxury player that doesn't have enough quality for the real top teams like Liverpool and City, nor the work rate / discipline for Wolves / Sheff United.
2020 Dele still scored and assisted more than Maddison. Maybe he would struggle but it comes to different playstyle, different formations.

And seriously, why do you think he lacks work rate/discipline? He's making more pressures than league average for midfielders. Same with
tackles. Distance covered and sprints are very good too.

When do the ITK’s ever have a bad word to say about DL?
Ignore ITK on this then. Instead look at the stuff said by journalists, both Redknapps, Hoddle, Jenas Levy and Poch himself. It's not like this is some kind of illuminati cover up ffs.

They also say themselves regularly that DL is a cheapskate. Goes both ways. I just don’t understand why I feel like I’m screaming into the air trying to prove the point that Poch was hard done by it’s really not that contentious of a point at the end of the day.

I always will. You all hate me for it. It’s just what it is until I get banned. Thanks for your input though trix.
Lol no one hate you dude, well at least I don't. I just know how it was is all. I love what Poch did for us, and I'll always remember him fondly for that. Fact is though he brought his end upon himself in many respects, and that shouldn't be forgotten either.

Would genuinely be one of the first players i would sell in our current squad, considering his age and price and the lack of balance his play brings to our team.
2020 Maddison isn't that amazing either, less goals and assists than Dele and Dele had some injuries.

I never said that Poch didn’t dig his own grave in a way. I’m fact I agree. His comments before the CL final about leaving were shameful. But I feel that he was at the end of his tether and IMO it all has to do with Levy. But yes let’s just digress for now.

agreed
funny isnt it how we always seem to have a zero net spend yet Levy always wants to spend the cash!

I know some clever clogs is going to list windows were we spend more than we sold, but every window seems to balance and i get it we built a stadium, but we also sold and never replaced key players, started season with glaring holes in our squad! i get its a balancing act and we are playing a premier league money ball but lets be real, we break even! I dont believe Poch was back enough at key times, like rednapp and Jol!

Exactly.

It's like saying "oh, we were 3 points behind Liverpool after 1 game so did poorer in the remaining 37 games because now we're 4 points behind"

Zero logic

It's actually nothing like saying we are only 3 points behind Liverpool after one game. That's just being very silly and distracts from a far more sensible and reasoned post that Brasil_Spur made.

This is a flawed way of looking at it. What you need to do is take the points per game average and run that over the season. That would have put is on 44 points and left us in 13th or 14th depending on goal difference.

Running Mourinho's points per game across the season would have had us finish on 66 points and given us a final position of either 3rd or 4th depending on goal difference.

It's a good point you make, but that wouldn't exactly be fair either when the difference in points we are talking is a one game swing and we had such a difficult start to the season having played away to Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool and Leicester during that period.

This is why Mourinho normally favours a specialist DCM who can also disrupt play quickly, either through ability to win the ball in the middle third (Hojbjerg the best in the league at this statistically), or tactically foul, with the team able to rapidly resume a low block. Against the best teams (Liverpool, Man City, Barca etc.) he will play an extra defensive midefielder purely to be disciplined in terms of positioning and physicality (why Sissoko is worth keeping as a squad player). Get a top drawer DCM and maybe he can play Lo Celso and Ndombele in a 4-3-3. And in big games, especially away from home, you drop Ndombele for a Sissoko and revert to 4-5-1 counter attacking. That 5-0 drubbing by Barca really did make him risk averse!
The season after the 5-0 loss to Barca, he played the exact same midfield ( Khedira, Alonso and Ozil) and attack and won 2-1, so not sure that result did have such an impact on his CM line up.

Later the same season (after the 5-0 loss) he played Khedira, Alonso AND Pepe in CM (Pepe as a DCM) in front of Ramos and Carvalho at CB in the El Classico final against Barca and won it 1-0 after extra time with heavily defensive and dirty tactics.

12 games is enough to show a trend and whilst we did have a few tough fixtures Poch had the benefit of a full pre season and injury free squad for those games - things Mourinho didn't get.
