I've been twice this year. Southampton in the cup and Watford in the league. Neither of them were great to watch but the Watford game was when I felt that Poch was going through the motions. He set us up in such a negative way with barely any creativity on the pitch. It was only after he dropped the 352 for a 4231 and brought on N'Dombele that the game became enjoyable.

Mate how is that at all relevant to what I wrote?

It was sideways, that's exactly what I'm saying. The aim is to try and pass it out of defence, if the opposition lines up high up the pitch and tries to do that = a lot of sideways passing. The point is that it wasn't some defensive move. It was still a proactive attempt to create space further up the pitch to win. Again, Attacking or maybe 'proactive' football is not about how 'fun it is to watch' rather simply what the aim is.

I actually don't think the football was that bad, most of the time last season, because I saw the point on it, but there were definitely certain games, because teams would prevent us from playing our game, and we only played our game. We didn't really play in another way (well bring Llorente on I guess).
Yeah I suppose the main difference is that Jose sometimes actively chooses to play negatively, while Poch would always intend to play positively even though it didn't always come off.

My person opinion is that Poch was a great manager who lost his way towards the end. We were at our best under Poch when we played simple systems that played to our strengths and pressed high all over the pitch. We essentially played 2 formations for the vast majority of Poch's first 3 seasons (4-2-3-1 then later 3-4-3),everyone knew their job and we outran 95% of teams.

At some point Poch drank his own kool aid and tried to reinvent the wheel. Every week he was mixing it up. We stopped pressing and it all gradually fell apart.

I don't think this is all Poch's fault: we also lost our excellent fullbacks, didn't refresh the squad and had the stadium and injury issues. However, barring a handful of games, we looked some shade of shit most weeks from the beginning of the 18-19 season when Poch started playing with that bastard diamond.

We played good football for 2 or 3 years or so under poch and won nothing, if we won the Europa I couldn’t care how we play

It's been a long time since we've won anything so I totally understand why a lot of supporters wouldn't care how we played to get something

Our home game against Newcastle this year was the worst football I had ever seen us play live. First time I ever felt like I had completely wasted my money going to a match. It was obvious something had to change. I was getting to the point where I would have got excited to see a forward pass into the oppositions half. I will take any kind of football as long as I see some forward passes and a few shots.
I have to agree I was so bored watching this match it was a dreadful performance.

The only thing that kept amused was an american and his girlfriend sitting next to me that had come over to the UK for a week and paid £150 each for a ticket.

I got talking to him and found out he was from Boston and was used to supporting teams that win things in the Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins, which I then pointed it out well you truly fucked up choosing Spurs!:poop:

There has to be a balance. I loved how we played peak Poch. Football is enjoyment after all. At that time you had Van Gaal at United playing shit football but winning league cup.

Its all about balance. I dont want to get bored watching spurs but win the league cup

If I'm going to be bored to tears with our football, I will have to insist on more than a league cup

Boring football can also be threatening. You can be dry and hell and sit back, but you can still be dangerous on the counter.

There are too many times when we’ve been bad defensively, and toothless going forward.

Post the break we’ve been marginally better, but I’m still totally unconvinced by Mou

It was terrible wasn't it. So hot, the hottest I'd ever been at a game of football. Plus I was fucking hungover.

I'll take whatever football we play over the next few years thankyou very much as long as we win.
This argument is so reductive. Teams who play negative football don't win with the way football is at the moment. You can't win anything just winning at home and nicking draws away from home any more and the cups have been dominated by the best teams too recently too.

How does any of that correlate to what I said? lol

Well the counter argument is that trophies are won on fine margins. There’s no guarantee of winning trophies. Even for Man City.

We can control how we play. And playing well doesn’t preclude trophies. As Man City and Liverpool have shown.

So your statement was pithy at best. We all want to win trophies and be in for a thrill but the thing we can hold the coaching team most accountable for is the style of play. There’s no trade off there. So let’s play well and then try to win.

I would have thought that the easiest thing to hold the coaching team accountable for is results on the pitch surely? Ultimately that's what DL will hold Jose and by virtue of that his coaching team accountable for.

That isn't a counter argument to my point because my point is that beggars cannot be choosers and since we've won a paltry 1 trophy in 20 odd years I'm not going to be complaining about the style if it brings home a trophy.

Because the style of play you've been so desperate to see over the years has resulted in absolutely nothing apart from good memories...I mean obviously we all want great football and trophies but if one isn't available or possible I'm taking the next best thing

So my point is that I'll take football that isn't easy on the eye over the sexy football and not winning anything.

Trophies =/= Results on the pitch

We’ve had good results and no one was upset with the results on the pitch for any of Pochs full seasons. It was great!

I get that some people value good football over everything. I get that although I'm with you and see trophies as the priority. Thing is that it's not really possible to expect people to change their way of thinking either way but what I would say is that DL knew what he was getting with Jose and providing that he doesn't lose the team and he gets results then people will have to accept that he ain't going anywhere for a while.
