The doing a Leeds thing and the club being sustainable in the future as a reason to not take risks seem straight out of the David Sullivan playbook, I never really saw Levy in a similar light to them but to have one striker for a whole season is just odd.

Why are people comparing us to Atletico Madrid? They can defend and counter with quality, two things we can’t do. As many have said, Jose should at least be able to make us difficult to play against.

We have needed a decent back up striker for a few seasons but the club has conveniently ignored it, in the meantime we constantly flog him to death become we have no one else crazy.

Youre bound to concede goals and make errors if you're being constantly dominated. Defence and keeper under constant bombardment
That wasn’t the case against Leipzig though. We were in the ascendant there, Lloris and the defence had had little of note to test them. Then boom, 2 errors in a short space of time and the momentum, then the game were handed to them.

Without those key mistakes we would of lost by the same scoreline eventually just an issue of timing.

I was going to edit my last post, but what I wanted to say got a bit too long

I'd add to what I said above with a quick point to say that I'm not advocating ridiculous levels of spending, just that I can't see how we're not in a position now to be a little looser in the wallet.

Obviously, we need to operate within certain limits - maybe (and I'm just spitballing) a measured, but still significant, uptick on what we spent in the summer (if you include the fee for Lo Celso which we paid in January).

Move from being a club that views £50-60 million players not as strictly marquee signings designed to make a big splash and so occur only once in a month of Sundays.

Have to caveat that by also saying that I still hold Miguel Delaney's points that he raised in his Indy article about wages being the more important aspect of a player transfer, but the overall point is that we should be spending more and viewing spending on players as being a cornerstone of trying to bring tangible success to the club, rather than the view that Levy expressed at the THST meeting about spending not being linked to success. If that is a genuine belief, it has to be dispensed with, because it won't serve us as we are now.
I also find it utterly ludicrous for a chairman who hasn't been in control of a club who has won anything (other than 1 league cup) in almost 20 years say that spending is not synonymous with success. How has he come to that conclusion? We haven't had any success for him to measure it against anything.

So Liverpool's season hits the rocks in a period where they lose Henderson and Alisson to injury.

But injuries aren't a valid excuse...

Note the style of play from Liverpool's opposition tonight too. Wonder if the Ateltico fans are saying how lucky they were right now? Wonder if Simeone is a 'coward' for his wait and see style. There are multiple ways for winning a football match. Are Spanish journos calling Simeone lucky for his dated passive/reactive style? (Unsurprisingly some of the serial Jose bashers in the media are creaming over Simeone tonight)

Granted Ateltico are superbly coached defensively and have a great spirit and motivation that we can only dream of at this moment in time, but it's certainly food for thought.
Amazing what a coach can do when he has time to coach, fit players to play and a team well versed and confident as a result.

Heh, who knew?

No, the club haven't 'ignored it' we signed Llorente, didn't we? This time arround, the world was so short of 'back-up' strikers, even United, one of the world's greatest clubs were left with the only option of signing Ighalo when Rashford got injured. You'd think a club like United would have their pick of such players, but even they were left with that dummy, so what chance did we have of finding anayone suitable for our cause?

Exactly. He’s in no position to lecture on winning Trophies.

Liverpool are nothing like us. Simeone is nothing like Mourinho. Simeone may not have the trophies that Mourinho has but he 100 times the manager. He has stayed at Atletico for years and constantly rebuilt his team to compete. Mourinho builds a team for one season. The fact is Mourinho’s teams have never been teams they have always been about the individual. His Porto team was built on Deco’s brilliance. His Chelsea and Madrid teams had numerous super stars in them. Even his Inter team was built around Sneider and Eto.
Jesus, that dead horse you’re flogging must be just bones by now.

What would you rather him say?

.

If he could pinpoint where he’s made mistakes and be honest about them then I’d be hopeful of a change. Some sense of self awareness and humility.

But I’ve known how he works since he dumped Martin Jol and he’ll never change.

I think people are misreading what he said.
I think what he was implying is that spending money doesn't necessarily guarantee success.

It's still shitty to hear from the chairman of a badly depleted team as a fan, but I think that's the point he was trying to make.

Agree. Personally I think we'll see JM gone by Xmas but its not gonna be all his fault. This squad needs an overhaul and that isnt going to happen. I can see next season starting the same as this one is finishing. We need a change at the top or change in philosophy if we want to be succesful. Failing that we need a coach who can get the best from what he has at his disposal and JM cannot do that imo.
Shit roll or shit sandwich scenario.
Or I'm completely wrong and we spend wisely in the summer (already been told by the man himself we've a budget of £15.23 and a bag of salted peanuts) and JM turns this ship around. I'd settle for plugging the leak at the minute.

I’m actually of a different opinion. I don’t see us starting this way at all, I expect to see a well drilled team looking to right some wrongs.

We’ll see in the new season which of us was right I guess.

I genuinely hope that's the case and that I'm just letting my thoughts run away with themselves.

Maybe the painful state we're in at the mo is colouring my thinking.

I don't think that's particularly necessary, Nev. He doesn't have to flagellate himself in front of the fans. Just demonstrate that when he speaks with ambition, he then matches it with ambitious actions. I don't need an apology and it won't benefit anyone if he were to do so.

And I'm not saying he's not been ambitious - certainly in terms of growing Spurs as a brand he's shown remarkable drive. I'd like to see us pursue the upper tier of players now. That doesn't necessarily mean that every signing has to be that type, but just demonstrate that we're in the market for those players and we're willing to pay the price for them if they're the right signings for us.
