The liew one is particularly terrible. He’s usually such a good writer but fails 100% to understand anything to do with the club and where we find ourselves at this minute in time. Strange as he’s usually a good writer. I think us sacking Poch on top of appointing Mourinho really has put some in the media’s noses out of joint. All it took was one defensive performance to do it for them to write articles insinuating that’s what it’s been like since he’s been here, which is miles from the truth. It’s laughable really.

He's a massive Liverpool fan and was just gloating and sticking the boot in. I prefer it when he's writing enjoyable nonsense about other teams so I can just enjoy it.

I was very impressed with the tactics at the weekend. For all their possession and dominance Liverpool didn't really look like cutting us open that often and in the second half we could easily have scored one or two ourselves. Picking Tanganga was a masterstroke as well. It was probably totally unexpected by Klopp and you could see at the end of the game that he was relieved to take the three points.
The only way we were going to get something from the games was to play how we played, if we went toe to toe with them and pressing them everywhere it most likely would’ve been 4/5

I agree Vancouver (Toronto here!) But for owners to spend their own money it's their choice...they want to buy a pot its their nickel. We are a conservative company we are also a very steady company maybe that's why we keep Winks who seems now like a metaphor for us. Bread and butter rather than icing on the cake.
Yes we all would like success.Ive seen it with my own eyes and hope we would get back to the garden but it's going to take time. Maybe Joe will have a think and throw in some cash. Nah it wont happen.
I think though if we get a bit closer and Mourinho gets some wins that say he will make it happen then Joe could go the extra mile and at that point he would be stupid not to give us that last piece of the puzzle
Some good points there. Not sure how involved Joe Lewis actually is though.

Mourinho's latest press conf. pretty much has him making pointed remarks that are as ever aimed at those above making the decisions about transfers. Same as his comments on Eriksen, and about tomorrows game followed by the game on Saturday.

For those that wanted Mourinho to make a point. It's beginning.

I think it began as soon as Kane got injured with him saying we basically now don’t have a proper CF (100% correct as well in my view).

Let’s hope he has more success than Poch then. I suspect it won’t make any difference though

He was always going to do this, it was nailed from the second he signed for us, it was only a matter of when and how subtle or not so subtle, but was always going to happen, JM cannot help it

Think it's even more so with him saying we are at our limit and the only player he can give rest to is Toby. He is intimating the hold squad is on it's limit.

This will go sour really quickly if the board genuinely don't pull their finger our, thus proving anyone, whether it be our own fans who don't like him all the way up to the media and the tea lady, right that Mourinho hasn't changed.

Personally, it's already raw for me, it's disheartening yet again we face another shite window. It really just isn't good enough.

It's January 13th and we're being linked with players all over the gaff. I'm not freaking out just yet

There were plenty of positives in terms of set up and performance, but we shouldn't delude ourselves about how beta we were against Liverpool. The tactics might have fit the circumstances on this occasion, but Mourinho has a history as a reactive manager who plays the percentages, albeit rather well. It's been successful for him. But that time may have passed. Poch played a progressive game on the front foot, albeit imperfectly, and we had season after season of fun and success. It was an unfinished project, but one that exceeded expectations until this season. That's all over now and a big switch to a pragmatic, reactive approach is risky and probably regressive. And if it doesn't succeed it will set us back a long way behind the front foot teams in this league.

There are percentages to hoofing the ball from the keepers hands until it drops vertically somewhere in the opponents half. And sometimes those odds are better than passing out quickly against the best pressing teams. But over the longer term, they aren't. Similarly, you can drop deep and hope to score on the break, needing to advance the whole field to do so. Or you can challenge higher up and make things happen there.

Maybe everyone can't play the current en vogue winning way, and someone needs to break out from it to find another way. But I doubt the tactical 'genius' of always being reactive, and playing long (and high!), is going to be it.
Can agree on JM being "reactive" really, he studies opposition and works out ways to nullify their strengths whilst looking to maximise his own, this is proactive to me. Look at the evidence from his past teams, with Chelsea he achieved a record points tally with a record goal haul and a massive GDP due to so many clean sheets. With RM he had them scoring well in excess of 100 goals, worked out a way to nullify Barca (after getting gubbed 5-0 the previous season) and won the league. With AC Milan he had them winning the league by employing the same approach. Whilst he didn't win the league with Utd, he still employed this approach to finish 2nd and win 2 trophies.

All of the above points to a proactive approach where he worked out ways to nullify and maximise.

Too much emphasis is given to his pragmatic approach towards those teams who are direct challengers. Often the way to beat them is to make it a war of attrition as it takes away their main strengths. He's not a one dimensional manager, he's just had to revert to a one dimensional approach, to a great extent, this season because he's got limited resources to work with and very little time to work with them.

Those successful teams of his put the majority of their opposition to the sword on a regular basis, you don't score the goals they did by playing negative Football. This gets overlooked so often because the "showcase games" against the other elite teams he'd not go the "entertainment" route so that the TV stations could get their classics. He set up to win.

I'll take the odd war of attrition with a win, against other challengers, with goal fests against the rest all day long if it makes us successful.

Let's face it, the current best in the World have been doing that for large parts of this season and, as the pundits are so keen to tell us, that's what Champions do.

Pre-match presser (v Midsbro, cup replay):

Haven't seen it posted anywhere else yet, but Mourinho makes it clear that Tanganga is signed up beyond the summer (at 18 mins in the vid).

Reporter: (paraphrase) Are you worried about Tanganga's contract situation?
JM: What is the contract situation?
Rep: Currently ends at the end of the season.
JM: WRONG. Don't worry because it's wrong.

His press conferences are so interesting to watch and listen to, its hard not to believe in him despite all the negative press. Such an intelligent and articulate man.

I think he makes a great point with the disruptions since he has arrived. He has taken flak this week for not developing a style of play but since Xmas he's just been putting fires out all over the place, with no time on the training ground.

We won't see the best of what Jose can do with this team until he's had a preseason IMO (typically the Euros will disrupt that too). Just need to hope he and Levy are still getting on by then!

Agreed. Jose said that players participating up to the semi final stage of the Euros will be back in club training the same week the season starts - similar to the WC a couple of years ago. Ughh ☹

People might not like the way his teams play ( which is absolutely fair enough), but to suggest that somehow he’s a complete busted flush as playing styles have changed in the last few years is nonsense. He knows what he’s doing.

  1. Watch the whole press conference and if you didn’t before then you’ll understand afterwards just what a top top manager Jose is and that he can clearly see where we need to improve but that he’s been a bit hamstrung by coming in mid season and not having time to work with the players mid week and then on top of that a ton of injuries to key players
  2. Watch from 18 mins until the end and you’ll see how he wants us to play, it is not ‘hoofball’ it’s a progressive fast direct balanced 4-2-3-1 with a 4 in defending situations and a back 3 when we build up the play, he will also know and says basically how he’s figuring out game by game our strengths and weaknesses so he’ll know how to coach and improve those, things like shape off the ball, playing with width, concentration levels etc etc and he’ll also now know which players are up to the job and which areas we need signings to get us to the level he can get us to. I really think we all need to give this man patience and time to build something with us but ideally we get some signings to improve the squad ASAP so that build and progression happens as fast as possible
  3. COYS.
