I know it's early days but this new brand of football JM has been developing during his sabbatical, well, it seems remarkably similar to the brand of football that got him booted out of Old Trafford. I've pretty much lost hope of seeing GLC, Sessegnon, Skipp etc get any game time even though the players they could replace look ready for the knackers yard. I'll know from the team sheet v Brighton if I actually want to watch any of it, which is a bit sad really.
I think people need to appreciate that due to the club's position when he took use over, playing style is very much secondary, now and probably for the rest of the season.
Getting points, by hook or by crook are all that matters.
We were 14th, top 4 looked highly unrealistic, but no-ones going to give 2 shits about playing style if we somehow get into the top 4 come May.
Well actually some will, but there are some right entitled weirdos on here.

There are some obvious reasons why he's appearing to toe the party line in saying we don't need signings in January.

As others have said if we make it known we're in the market with money to spend prices will go up. But also, if he implies that there are players who aren't going to be in his plans that will make it harder to get the squad on board.

It will also imply that Poch left him with an unbalanced squad that's not fit for purpose. While that may be true he will know that anything he says that could be taken as a dig at Poch will make it more difficult to win over the fans. He's many things but I don't believe he's stupid and he'll know that he needs to tread carefully in the first few months.

Remember as well that despite all his experience in the game he finds himself in a new situation here. He's taken over a struggling side mid season which is a new thing for him, so he'll be forced to work differently to begin with.

In short, as many have said, he needs time. Time to get his ideas across, time to get his squad where he wants it and perhaps most importantly time to in still the correct mentality into the team.

Because let's face it, whatever you think of his tactics on Sunday, the players performing dreadfully in a big game isn't a new issue.
Great post

We're in a bad way no doubt about it.
Goalkeeper, defence and midfield are in poor shape. Apart from up top the spine of the team is broken.
Second choice keeper, nothing we could do about that though but its still a problem.
Now Toby has signed thats added a bit of stability but Verts not signed, letting Trippier go without replacing him, Davies being injured and Rose being past it has left our defence up shit creek.
Then the midfield. No dm for over a year. Thats mismanagement. Add to that the Eriksen saga. We spend 60m on a player that spends more time sitting on the bench than playing. Wtf is that about? And GLC cant get a look in either.
Thing with JM he likes big lumps and always has. For that reason alone Dier and Sissoko will always get in ahead of Ndombele, Winks and Glc. He also prefers experience so Eriksen still gets on instead of those 3.
I didnt like him publicly saying Son was crying blah blah blah. Thats the JM of old rearing his head.
Those that thought he's changed his ways, he hasnt. Its easy to be smiles and jovial when you're winning. When it doesnt work and we lose I fully expect him to revert to type and throw players under the bus.
I just hope we can last long enough to win something before it turns sour.
Agree

I’m willing to give him time, hopefully a few signings to improve weak areas and he can get us over the line to win a small cup etc but if not this football is exhausting, high press quick possession football back on the menu if Jose doesn’t get the results please

Absolutely give him time. I'm just a bit disappointed after all the hype about new style, new backroom staff, new training methods blah blah that what were getting is some version of Portugese Tony Pulis football. My disappointment is compounded by exciting players sat on the bench hour after hour (or not even getting on the bench) while we're treated to hoof ball and brainless defending. Really hoping for some personnel changes v Brighton but won't be the least bit surprised if it's more of the same.

Style IS important though. We need to create a flow. The goals will come.
Stop the ball watching at the back and we are fine

Great shithousary from Jose trying to get Sonny’s red card overturned

It’s why he loves the premier league, don’t you know! Because of our fair play and not wanting to dive and fain injury

You’ve gotta love him even if you hate him

It just doesn't make sense when Mourinho is so despised yet on the other hand he is expected by the same group that he should deliver. ?‍♂

Yeah but it’s been a few weeks, not 5 years. If it had been a full year and he’d built his own team then fair enough, but a month? It’s gonna take longer than that to get the tactics and team sorted. People talk about exciting players but they have in the past but the ones that aren’t playing are often not playing for a reason.

So, it's far too simplistic to suggest opposition teams can beat us because we play the same system. So does Liverpool, but that doesn't stop them from winning.

If you've got a proactive system, you don't need to change it. Klopp and Pep set the standard by keeping possession and being incredibly purposeful with it. Ours is reactive, like United's, and based on longer balls and breaking quickly. If an opponent is concerned about not winning the physical battle, they can set up a bit deeper and build play up. And just soak up our longer balls and prevent breakaways.

That's the danger with abandoning the Poch blueprint. We dropped off, and too many performances in the last year were abysmal. But the approach was the right one. And consecutive top 4s, a CL final, and a bloody good time were proof of it. Hopefully Mourinho can settle on something a little more focused on good footballers with purposeful possession. But in recent years it seems more like Klopp style footy has left him behind.

He does like a physical player but he’s also had plenty of ballers in his sides.

He seems to like players who can combine both, which we have very, very few of ( Kane? )

This shows that the players are not at the standard that we need and the coach must be clever tactically. I thought Mourinho has been by hiding Aurier and allowing our attacking players to get forward and think aggressively rather than focus on defensive responsibilities but that was until being out coached versus Chelsea. Ultimately we need new fullbacks and probably one center mid and let Winks, GLC and Ndombele play more. I still have all the faith in Mourinho and think some of the reactions are exaggerated.

I think that at the moment jose is prioritising substance over style. Ultimately its a results orientated business. This means simplifying the approach to gather results (by playing the more experienced players, ones that he is more familiar with) while gathering more info and assessing the squad on the fly.

Results are going to be mixed until he has time to bed his ideas in whilst getting rid of the wantaways as well as getting in players we know he needs.. a new back up gk rb dm.

With regards to the new boys, both have been struggling with injury and match fitness.. im sure they'll be bedded in eventually once they get up to speed.. probably ndombele first because hes physically much stronger.. :)

Liking or disliking Mourinho is irrelevant. He's paid 12m a year to deliver something the fans want to watch. At the moment we've had some quite fortunate results from pretty dreadful football. I'm sure he can do better.

I think the results were deserved, for different reasons. Wolves for strength of Charcter, West Ham Burnley and Bournemouth we were the better team every time.

Once we have a midfield, the performances we saw v Chelsea and Utd will be a thing of the past I’m sure.

Comparing Jose Spurs current style or way of playing with the present Klopp Liverpool or Pep City is a bit premature

Klopp joined in Oct 2015..he only got his act together at Liverpool in 2017-2018, they finish 8th in his first season

Jose will need time and money...

regarding the midfield ,I think Ndombele is the answer to the attacking side buton the defensive side I wonder now what Mourinho thinks of Dier if he still thinks of him in the same terms and what about Winks. What can he carve out for himself?
