You honestly don't think selling Rose for £55m and Dier for £50m even back then was a great deal to be had? Even without hindsight anyone can see it's a way too inflated price to outright reject.

Go look back on the thread when we sold Walker. Letting one player go to a rival had people using the "selling club" tag. Letting another two go would have caused this forum into meltdown.

What Mourinho has done at the start of his tenure has been incredibly intelligent. He’s taken the core of our squad over the last few years and said I believe you’re better than this, go out there and show me. It’s easy to want to give up on poor performing players but Mourinho has taken those out of form or previously in the doghouse like Alli, Dier, Sissoko, Moura, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, and Aurier and emphasized their importance and value. Absolutely crucial to get performances out of players who we know have the talent.

Having reintroduced belief and form to the squad veterans, his next big challenge will be doing the same with the new signings and young players like NDombele, Lo Celso, Sessengnon, Skipp, and Parrott. Very encouraging to see the young subs today and Bayern will be another great opportunity. All these players are crucial to the long term health of our club.

There’s still holes in the squad, we probably still a RB, CDM, CB, and maybe GK. But we still have more than enough talent to finish top 4 this season, Mourinho has clearly emphasized that and targeted improvement for crucial players and it’s paying off early. If we can integrate the rest, it’ll be a great second half of the season.

Dale Carnigie once wrote something along the lines "when you are wrong, admit it quickly and emphatically."

Well, it was less than a month ago that i posted this beaut.
What i don't like is that Mourinho isn't necessarily true to the club's soul. He seems to me to be more of a mercenary type. If you think that in some ways, Spurs today are in large part who we are because of Bill Nicholson, then one of his quotes stands large in my mind. “It’s no use just winning, we’ve got to win well.”..... If you don't think Nicholson as part of the club's DNA, then Mourinho is an admirable candidate.

However, that position had to be modified rather quickly
"And finally, regarding beautiful football, if the hints about Jose having some new ideas of playing are correct, you would have to hope it is one quarter as revolutionary as the push and run. TBH, as optimistically skeptical as i was about Jose, he knocked it out of the park in the press conference acknowledging Poch's contribution, the need to win but also staying true to our culture. It is hard not to believe he can turn the malaise around quickly while playing beautiful football in the near future.
[/QUOTE]

Which brings us to today. There was some beautiful, yet practical, football played today. Perhaps Jose was always capable of operating close to the soul of the club's culture than many of us originally thought. For sure our defense needs to shore up, but there was some amazing, free flowing play. I was wrong and gladly so!

That performance and result was for all those spurs and other fans who said Jose would bring us boring defensive football, anyone who said that has never properly watched or understood Jose teams.

As I posted before:
-his first Chelsea team was exciting
-his Real Madrid team scored over 116 goals in the league which was a record
-Inter Milan scored decent amount of goals they just are remembered for one incredibly effective resilent defensive display down to 10 men away to barcelona
-his 2nd Chelsea team won the league and scored tons of goals

Great performance great win!

It's very early days, but I'm enjoying the football a lot more under Mourinho so far. A lot of the football under Poch this last year or so was sending me to sleep, literally in one or two cases.

have to echo that sentiment but Spurs performance at the end of the Poch era was driving me to drink more than sleep

It would have been good money but would have left the club short.

You don't let go of two of the best players in their respective positions in Europe if you want to challenge, the fallout from the Walker sale was bad enough.

And do you really think we would have adequately replaced them properly? , our behaviour in the transfer market in the last few years hasn't been great.

In hindsight it seems like a good move but at the time it would have out us back even further.

Agree. It's also worth remembering that Rose was 26/27 and Dier 23 in the summer of 2017. Even if you think they are at their peak value that summer, there isn't really anything to suggest they won't continue at a peak level for the next 4+ years (no injury history at that time if I remember correctly). So much risk in identifying and developing adequate replacements.

Saw this earlier and was fuming. In some ways you have to respect Sissoko for coming out and saying this, but why are the players already ignoring the manager after 4 games?

Breathtaking arrogance by the players to ignore a manager with the CV Mourinho has.

Agreed

I’m loving how we are mixing our play up during games. At time we go long and direct at times, while at other times we will be a lot slower in our buildup. Also nice seeing us not playing every ball through a congested middle, but spreading the ball out to the wings.

He's not daft mate, this season is basically an audition for everyone in the squad...he'll know who is willing to/capable of following instruction soon enough.
I think tbh it's more to do with players not really taking the info on board and using it, rather than arrogance or purposely defying him.

I thought he may have got the name 'Sonaldo' from his son as it's widely used amongst Fifa players.

Was good to hear him say that Kane won't be playing on Tuesday.

This. Was tiresome watching us pass it side to side in front of the oppositions packed defence again and again.

There are a very select few artists past and present that I undoubtedly had way too little appreciation for 15 years ago. Keira Knightley is one, who lately has become this incredible actress, another one is Caravaggio, turns out isn't an Italian car, and when I heard about Shakira's Laundry Service I thought I don't need an immigrant to do my laundry. And now adding to the list is ShauZé Mourinho. I had no idea he could make Tottenham Hotspur pull off a 5-0 win.

I was saying the same during the match today. We just don’t do it now. It’s much more high risk as you don’t always have the ball but it’s a lot less boring, easy to read and defend against.

I think there’s a user here with a much better rendition of this as his profile picture
