He absolutely isn't Alex Ferguson, and I don't think it's fair to compare him to one of the greatest managers in my lifetime so early in his career.

I and actually many people in football believe that what he did achieve with us was pretty special. It's clear you don't and that's fine but I am looking at things from a relative point of view. Poch competed with, finished above many top managers during his tenure with us despite not having the tools they did at their disposal.

People forget where we've come from. It was only 10 years ago that I couldn't even contemplate the possibility of being Champions League regulars. Even in the aftermath of that wonderful run to the QFs under Redknapp. To be regulars in the CL knockout stages and not look out of place is a massive deal for us. Much of that is down to Pochettino, regardless of how things turned out.

We now need to look to the next chapter though, and Mourinho is an ideal candidate to bridge that next stage of "winning stuff" - So fingers crossed, let's hope we can achieve our potential and cement our place at the top table for the next generation.

I love Poch and always will. I can't believe what he achieved for us.

But Poch staying would have meant overhauling the squad and pretty much writing off this season. He needs young, fit players to completely buy into his philosophy. Sadly, wiith this group of players, the dream died with that champions league final.

On the other hand, Jose could come in now and squeeze a couple more years out of this squad and possibly get them over the line in terms of silverware. Ideally a club should rotate these two managers every 3 years :) Poch brings through the youngsters and Jose takes over as they mature, then rinse and repeat.

And I don't get the "he'll leave a wreck behind him" and it will end badly argument with Jose. It ends badly with every manager, that's why it ends. The way I see it, Levy as thrown the dice on extending this squad cycle a little further, and when it's over of course it will be bad and ugly - we'll have key players wanting out and running down their contracts, Kane pushing for a move, the need to overhaul the squad massively, players we'll want to shift but can't, and of course a sulking manager.

In other words, we'll be back to exactly and precisely where we were at the start of this season, except maybe and hopefully with some silverware in the cabinet.

Good post, this is exactly the reason why I was championing Jose before the end of Poch's reign because our current squad standing is that of a team now primed to win trophies, I didn't buy into this rebuild because that would have meant waiting another few years to be competing again and possibly losing the likes of Kane, Alli and Son in the process not to mention the contract rebels.

As far as I can see it our academy isn't producing how it was, it's not as if we have the likes of Chelsea's or even Arsenal's talent waiting to bust through the door, we are a team for the very much here and now and we need a manager to get us over the line, Jose was the perfect candidate.

So for 1/5 of his time he had a blip. In that 1/5 we had a CL final.
I'm not sure what you are arguing for (or against) but may I point out that it was yet another lost final, another missed attempt at a trophy. If you lost the final you lost the final, why keep bringing it up as a point of redemption. It's the greatest singular moment of failure.

How often do managers leave their clubs in, what would be considered by the fans of that club, a good state?

This is such a weak argument, look at how state of our rivals how they were left in by previous managers, look at how Ferguson left Man Utd ffs.

God knows how you coped with our matches towards the end of Poch's reign then.

 Yeah it was frustrating for the last 10 months or so..... But at the time blamed it on squad not being refreshed and that world cup fatigue bandied about on here.

I will still support the team I just don't feel the enthusiasm... Any it's early days let's see.... I may well be singing from a different hymn sheet when we in the final of the FA cup and Harry Kane is holding that trophy aloft.

As a huge fan of Poch the person (mainly because he did what he did in spite of Levy), I think there are still a lot of us in denial about how bad things had got. I'm still not buying the fact that a load of players would have left if he didn't, but there was clearly something fundamentally wrong.

I want to believe he was fucked over right at the end, but I'm no longer of that opinion. It was the right change 100%, I'm backing Mourinho all the way.
That’s a relief mate, I was starting to get worried there.

Yeah he's only going to be here for a couple of years. As for what state he leaves us in, who knows.

Don’t you know, half the football fans in the world have crystal balls when predicting Mourinho's behaviour!

I don't think we should jump to that conclusion as each job in football is different.
He could have still held out for a job at Real, or any other of the top tier clubs but didn't hesitate in coming to us.

Mourinho is all about Mourinho so he must have seen something in the job to attract him.
And my view is that he sees a club with the best facilities in the world, the highest profits in the world, and a top four squad who's fanbase would see 4th and a league cup as success.
He'll be under no pressure and back in London so I wouldn't be surprised if he took a longer term view of this job as he'd love another adoring fanbase like he had with Chelsea.

We'll be happy with him if he wins any kind of pot, Levy won't sack him as long as he's in the top four, so I don't see any real reason why the wheels would come off so soon.

True, it will certainly help. But Mourinho is a walking ego, it's never just about the money for him.
He wants to be worshipped and he knows if he was to deliver a PL or CL that's what he'd get from us. He won't get that anywhere else in Europe that has a realistic chance of one of the big ones.

Think he has set us up wrong tonight. Very poor performance first 45 mins. Son and Moura not in the game at all. Aurier constantly getting exploited. Hopefully he’ll tweak things at HT.
