As a member of old school, i expect Tottenham to win and to win with flourish. That was why Jose's appointment was concerning.

At this point in time, i have zero expectation of playing with flourish and am more than willing to settle for wins regardless if it is ugly. This is about getting back to Wednesday night games in Europe. With the level of injuries and the players' mental states, this is an extraordinary challenge for Jose or any coach for that matter. I"m not going to bash Jose for unwatchable soccer until he has had to install his system and his players. And then i'll bash like hell if it is negative or losing soccer.
Soccer ?

Imagine making a well-put, soundly reasoned post like that, and then falling flat on your face with the very last word, undermining all the good stuff that went before. It's like @soflapaul's post metaphorically captured the very essence of Spurs. :playful:

LOL. Wasn't that the original name of the sport? Knowing how much more sophisticated you Brits are than us hicks, it is mystifying when we Americans do something more proper than the Brits.

Perhaps if we lost the Revolutionary War (translation: American War of Independence), we'd be saying "football".

Seems fucking criminal now that we dodnt bring in a striker, the rest of the squad depth doesnt look too bad but we do look really blunt up top. Really worrying for the rest of the season, if Mourinho gets us into the top 4 he is a miracle worker.

Top 5 should be all it takes. We have a chance as long as the lads treat it like 6-7 cup finals until Kane or Sonny hopefully make a miraculous recovery. We need some luck with that and along the way

no complaints about the set-up tonight, and liked the double change after an hour. Poch wouldnt have made a change for another 15 minutes.

We defended and attacked like men, we are getting there, i see good progress, this is much better than comedic backpasses, sidepases and utterly clueless abject movement due to lack of intent and tactical instructions in the attacking third during Pochs tenure.

I see people are using their Mourinho bias to slate him after last nights performance. I have to be honest and say that it’s getting boring.

Statements like “the Southampton or Wolves manager would do better” are quite frankly embarrassing, and these people have forgotten how utterly dreadful we were under Poch and yet they probably think he is the best manager on the planet!

Fact is, Mourinho has barely had any time with us, had one transfer window where he didn’t get many of the players he wanted, and has lost both Son and Kane without a suitable back up. Quite how we can blame him for any of the above is beyond me, yet some people will use anything to slate him because they don’t want him here.

I remain open minded on Mou. I didn’t want him but he’s obviously had some amazing successes in the past.

What I don’t really get is ready first 60 minutes of that match. Everything about our shape was wrong and on a different day we would have been three or four down. The difference between the sides is not as pronounced. No way.

I’m not saying we/he won’t come good, but the early phases of that game were utter dross

Poch also wouldn't have been hitting long balls for 75 minutes

Watch the Ajax home match again, the reason I'm comparing the two is because we were in very similar situations with out two strikers missing.

Anyway I see what Jose is trying to do, keep us in matches until around the 70th min mark then makes subs to get a stranglehold of the game which is when we start playing football and you have to say it's working for the most part, his hands are tied at the moment though.

If it wasn't for a Ben Davies error, we may have achieved that clean sheet / 1-0 scoreline too. Cannot legislate for fouls that Davies made leading to penalties.

I could see JM's game plan last night. Shame it didn't come off I actually feel we were the ones who were unlucky.

I'm not gonna blame him for the position we are currently in with the injuries we have and the squad he has inherited, but if we set up and play the way we did last night over the next 6 games, culminating in the Man Utd game at home which are in all likelihood going to define how far we go in both cups and where we will finish in the league and I can easily see us losing 4 or 5 of them and maybe snatching one or two draws.

I really don't know what to think. We've got decent results and massively closed gap to 4th. Clearly there are injuries to match winners and a disjointed squad. HOWEVER, it's still a pretty decent squad and if Poch, or other, was manager, we wouldn't be ceding possession against every opponent. Probably would have had worse results, too. Very confusing.
Problem is that although we had plenty of possession under Poch, for the last year at least, we were so pedestrian in attack and very predictable. Obviously there is a happy medium out there and all I think that a lot of us are saying is let's see where we are in a year's time.

I'm over this hoofball, surely thats not his game plan but I really cant see what it is.

There doesn't seem to be any structure in what we do, I really expected better.

To be honest there were times when we looked just as clueless even with Kane and Son in the side or just Kane , Southampton away in the league springs to mind but with the two of them, United and Wolves away in which we looked poor in both, despite winning one of them.

The thing that I thought was the problem before the injuries was the play that was behind the striker, the build up and general football. I remember not being as disappointed as I probably should have been when Kane got injured, because we weren't getting the ball up to him anyway and he was feeding off mere scraps.

IMO it's the football that's being played before the striker even comes into the equation that needs to improve. Our playing out from the back and through midfield mostly.

Kane back would obviously see us be getting over the line more often than not, but the football needed to drastically improve even with him in the side. I respect that we're still developing and evolving under Mourinho and we can't head in the direction we want (or at least no where near as fast) with the players we have out but having Kane and Son back at this stage wouldn't have us playing attractive football all of a sudden. I'm not trying to belittle how much it would mean to have them back, I just mean we had glaring issues even with them present under Mourinho. The things we needed to really improve when they were present are the same things we need to really improve on now.

Completely agree with this, it's possible to play good football through the 3rds without having a good striker. Yes you might not have the man to finish the chances but you can at least play some good stuff up until that point. All it takes is a shift in mentality. We have some absolutely quality midfielders, let's utilise them and get the best out of them. Not bypass them and hope for flick ons and winning second balls.

We have been outplayed in almost every game, even with Kane and Son in the team. It's not like when they come back we will suddenly start having good build up play. The style will be the same. We need to change our approach.

You cant go into the CL with no striker, no defensive midfielders and fullbacks who arent up to it and expect to wing it.
Anyone who expected anything different to what we saw last night was kidding themselves.
Yes we were better in the last 20min but they let us play and held out for the 1.0 win.
They know we dont have a striker on the pitch.
At least it looked like everyone gave 100% and Lo Celso, Lamela, Bergwijn looked really good.
Not like we were gonna win the bloody thing anyway is it?
Just hope we actually bring in what we need in the Summer.
The line up didnt help either imo but it was a tall order to expect a result anyway.

not sure what Mourinho could do different with the players available. if we’re still playing like this next season, then yes, cause for concern.

although highly unlikely, Mourinho needs money in the summer in order to implement whatever his style and system may be. he is clearly attempting to make the best of what we’ve got. defend and counter with pace.

and what’s funny is the majority wanting us to play better are the same ones criticising the players in match and player threads.

i don’t hold out hope of Jose being given significant money in the summer.

I can't wait till the season is over. The football we are playing is terrible with the players we got, even injured. GLC, Ndombele, Alli, Moura, Bergwijn, Lamela, Aurier, Davies, Winks can play decent football if they're instructed to do so, but they're told to sit back and hoof the ball only to invite more pressure and then pray we can do something on the counter. Not my type of football.
I miss the time where we used to play like RBL.

I was never excited getting Jose in the first time, but that's how it is and we will have to stick with it.
I will support him for now, but if next season doesn't get much better, with backings in the summer, i'll sharp my knives.
