When you multiply this difference across several top players, it adds up to tens of millions of pounds in salary each year.
Yeah I understand the math yet now we are writing off tens of millions due to the sale of underperforming deadwood (Ndombele, Sessegnon etc). With world class players we at least have a chance to get UEFA money from CL and/or win something

We need to pay more attention to salaries, not just transfer fees. Fans often overlook how significant these differences in salaries can be. For example, consider a high earner like Kane, who might have been making around £250,000 a week, compared to a lower earner like Johnson, who might be on about £75,000 a week. The difference for just one player is:
  • £175,000 more per week for the higher earner
  • £9,100,000 more per year (assuming 52 weeks)
When you multiply this difference across several top players, it adds up to tens of millions of pounds in salary each year.

So if we’re unwilling to invest in higher earners and spend more on salaries each year, our recruitment options will be limited, no matter how much our net spend is. The top players will likely choose other clubs that offer higher wages.
It's 100% the wage bill. Teams tend to finish about where their wage bill is relative to other teams, although there are of course outliers when things synergize or fall apart (Man Utd have underperformed for a few years and Liverpool have overperformed). For as long as I can remember we've had about the 5th highest wages and a good deal behind the clubs ahead of us (maybe close to 1/2 the wages of Man City). But 5th is about where we tend to finish, plus or minus a place; in the last 15 seasons we've only finished further than 2 spots from 5th on two occasions - 2nd in 16/17 and 8th in 22/23.

Wages are what I thought would really change with the new stadium. Wages, not transfer fees, are what holds us back from signing the truly top tier players, and it's just disappointing we aren't pushing the boat out on higher earners (and we probably reduced our wage bill this summer), because our revenue keeps climbing which should mean we can take on those top tier players.

Im still a bit concerned that a sizeable part of our fanbase are quite happy with them and willing to plod along throwing their cash at them.

Because we are supporters. We buy tickets to watch our team.
The other alternative is everyone supports the team who wins the most and the other teams play to empty grounds.

They love banging on about us being entitled & fragile.
When their continued blinded support of these owners, is exactly why this club is in such a continued mess.

Is there any reason the "Ousting of Levy" thread is locked? A lot of anti-ENIC posts in here (which I agree with), so think that thread needs some action.

We all unanimously agree that Levy/Enic are to blame for the position we are in not Ange, so let's try and do something about it. Get Levy out trending on X or something. It probably won't do anything, but fan protests did make Sugar uncomfortable/sell, and Goons protested over silent Stan till his son took over and turned them into a force, plus there were the Glaziers and Hicks & Gillet with the Scousers.

The problem is, that we us fans are too passive and let Levy off the hook each time. Long, sustained protests are required. Let the little man squirm in his seat when watching us.

💯 👏🏼

I know it gathered a few laughs, but my son is in his first team match day squad against Bolton on Saturday, I was actually being serious!
He must have had offers already no? If you are unsure about anything or any queries about the representation you are looking to go with just drop me a PM, if I don't know the answer I certainly know the right people that will.(y)

No it isn't.
Start questioning the bloke who reduces our wage bill after proclaiming that the stadium will be a game changer and that the priority is to win trophies by investing in the first team.

It is a game changer, I mean Timo Werner … on loan it’s certainly game changer stuff…

Anyone that thinks Levy doesn't want to win trophies is just plain wrong imo. Of course he does it's clearly in his own best interests that we do. The caveat that must go along with that though is financially how much is he willing to pay to achieve that, and the answer is as little as possible. With Daniel it's all about maximising Enic's stake, and he will pay whatever he has to pay to achieve that and no more.

I certainly think he wants to win even if he has more focus in other areas. I just think a lot of his thought processes when it comes to football are wrong.

We spent pretty big on players like Ndombele and Lo Celso and due to their salary, found it really difficult to sell. Levy's response to this appears to cut the wage bill massively so if a player doesn't perform we can sell more easily. If a player excels then we can offer a higher salary once we're confident they're at that level.

This puts a lot of pressure on the head coach. He's trying to deliver at the top end with players who are currently mostly potential.

Just a point about ENIC/Levy and the blame game.

Im 45, and I feel comfortable saying at this stage in my life I don’t have many escapes. Being a relatively new parent I didn’t realise just how lonely that can be, especially with my primary job being a stay at home dad. So football is a huge escape for me. I’ve loved Tottenham since I could remember, I grew up there and so many of my early memories are centred around the club and the stadium. Nowadays I don’t like a lot of what football has because or the club but I still support the team and hope to raise two little spurs fans.
I’m sharing this because when I was a kid I obviously am not armed with the full facts but I remember Scholar being somewhat ambitious if not a bit dim. It went wrong with the east stand and then sugar came over and apart from that magical Klinsamann summer he seemed intent on sucking the life and soul out of the club. He didn’t understand the crazy world of football and turned us into a middle of the road boring club but by then j knew my history. I knew about Ossie and Ricky, I knew about bill nic, Arthur Rowe. My earliest hero was Glenn Hoddle and for anyone who says they’re fine with crap football , when I watch Glenn I can’t understand why. He was a joy to behold.

So now we have enic and they seem to be a somewhat happy medium between sugar and Scholar. Better at dealing with the on pitch stuff and have built the infrastructure Scholar wanted (I remember going on a stadium tour and it was Ted Buxton who told us they wanted the lane to be a mini Nou Camp). But it’s now been over 20 years of broken promises. Need I remind you he came in telling us he didn’t care and has since made red a permanent fixture on our shirt (it might seem irrelevant to you but to me it’s a massive no), tried moving us to bloody Stratford, has constantly charged the highest prices possible for everything and all that other stuff. All the while dangling this carrot of this gamechanging stadium that would enable us to compete with the best.

He has the training ground , has the stadium, I suspect they now own huge chunks of the high street too and nothing has changed. His whole strategy seems to be hoping the rules catch up with others whilst he continues doing the bare minimum needed to be in that top six mix. I was having these same debates on other forums 15 years ago. Nothing has changed. We constantly leave managers way short which of course in term leads to things falling apart and the manager leaving. Blaming levy now is the only logical way in my head as we have tried every sort of manager going and it always ends up the same way.

So my point of this essay is that I want us to challenge, desperately. I’ve waited decades and invested so much and at one point this is supposed to be enjoyable. We have the revenues now, the only reason we don’t is because of a lack of will.

I think it is that black and white mate.
The priority is always investment, it's never what's best for the team right now and I don't think it ever will be under Enic.

The Levy quote about the stadium being the game changer is being shown up for what it truly is... complete bullshit.

Need fans to get that quote on t-shirts, humour will make Levy look the fool rather than just calling him a ****, which was quite funny when that bloke doing it went viral, but humiliation via factual humour is far more powerful.

Yeah, this is how I picture it working, to be honest. There's a list, and we move down it as needed. Sometimes this method works out, and when it does, we’re seen as decisive for quickly pivoting to another target when the top option isn't available. But as we go further down the list, you’d expect there to be compromises—whether it's lower salary demands or something else. Sometimes we’ll strike gold, but other times we’ll end up sacrificing quality.

Presumably someone like Odobert was somewhere on the "Ange-approved" list, but that doesn't mean it was the player he wanted for that position this season.

We've seen this happen lots of times at Spurs. That's not to give Ange a free ticket but it's mitigating circumstances.
And with Werner the thinking would’ve been this is a guy we can get for 2 seasons effectively with 2 loans, with 0 transfer outlay, who whilst not near the level we need to start is a top pro and person and has lots of pace and can be essentially a very cheap squad option.

I remember Ange saying ‘Timo was presented to me as an option and we thought he would be a good addition to the squad to give us something we don’t have and to bring his experience’

Aka an extra body for free who’s not great but not awful.

The issue comes when we renewed his loan for this season. As a stop gap in January due to our injury crisis fine, as a renewal it was a bad move and we used our transfer budget badly/ineffectively by operating like this renewing a player who isn’t good enough for the main area of squad weakness.

I like Archie Gray a lot but it would’ve made more sense to find a ‘free’ loan in CM and spend the £40mil or ideally more on a really top winger to positively impact our attacking play.

Now I don’t know if this poor squad building is due to Levy, Ange, Lange whoever but that plus Ange’s tactics are now both costing us the majority of us thought would be the case.
