We’ll need it because we have some extremely difficult games coming up !

Yeah, definitely. I think we'll win tomorrow, but if we don't, I could see us facing Arsenal still searching for our first win of the season. It wouldn't be a crisis, but it would put pressure on Ange.

5 matches after Everton are:
Newcastle, away (0 pts last season)
Arsenal, home (0 last season)
Brentford, home (3 last season)
Man U, away (1 last season)
Brighton, away (0 last season)

A lot of scope to improve on last year there. 2 wins and a couple of draws and we've improved.

I genuinely struggle to see us beating any of those teams, bar Brentford. Which is why we’re already on the back foot after Monday.

I really cannot understand the mind set of some of our fans.
Don't care how long you've supported THFC we've always been a win some lose some since I started going to the Lane in mid 50's.
Yes I'm lucky enough to have been able to see the Double winning side play as well as cup finals at Wembley, and enjoyed the Bus parade but I've also seen us relegated as well.
We've played some great entertaining stuff and stuff equivalent to the 3'rd tier.
Unless we are clever with our spending or, GOD forbid, we get bought out by other MONEY me/country. We will win some and lose some.
Just enjoy the winning when it comes and suffer the losing with a tad of decorum.

Yeah it's weird as I'm not really too fussed about Johnson. Yes in hindsight I'd maybe argue against signing him but he was never going to be that number one right winger for us to me, despite what we paid for him, and I still think he could be a good player off the bench. I feel like the greater disappointment is not having someone comprehensively better ahead of him.

To be fair it's not that I saw zero sense in brining in Werner, it's just when it happened I automatically felt like we weren't going to do what was necessary in those wide areas. Feels like I have to put a lot of faith in Odobert this season to improve our wide play 😬

@mil1lion makes a good point though, there are numerous 'small' things that are an improvement over last season. Younger players being more experienced, depth in the striker position to ensure Son stays out wide and we always have a focal point, better suited players and good options in the centre of midfield so we won't be in a situation like we were during AFCON and with players being injured/suspended, better depth at CB (even if we are still one short) so we won't see an Emerson/Davies type partnership again and such. Hopefully these things will prove to be very beneficial throughout the whole of the season.
True a ton of positives compared to last season but our squad will all be stretched more with Europa.

I hope we get a win tomorrow and can kick on from there.

I’m feeling slightly negative at the moment if I’m honest.

We desperately need cover at left back and centre back as a minimum and with the more times passes the more sceptical I am we’re going to get it

In midfield I think we need to replace Holjbergs experience and tackling. It’s just so lightweight on paper and I can’t see anyone that’s gonna commit that snidey foul that Rodri does so often to stop counters

Uptop we still look unbalanced although Solanke is a very very welcome addition but with Odobert being such an unknown quantity to me at least, I’m worried we’re in for another season of pacey wingers with no creativity.

I still love Ange but this squad to me looks a way off. Let’s see , hopefully someone is quoting me in nine months telling me I’m an idiot (I am)

Yeah it's the Premier League. We better improve and show our quality sharpish. Right now we're projecting 10 points from the first 7 fixtures or something. Have to up our game and especially be tighter at the back

How can we be projecting 10 points from
7 games when we’ve only played 1 game 😅

My prediction right now... Everton W, Newcastle D, Arse D, Brentford W, Man U L, Brighton D

And I think I'm remaining somewhat optimistic still. We'll have more evidence after this weekend of course and as we go on but my excitement has dimmed ever so slightly.

Some tough fixtures tbh. I’d probably take those results although we can nick something at Brighton and it’s about time we beat Arsenal at home again.

last year, we faced Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the first 7 games - and we walked away with 7 points in those matches.

It's a funny ol' game. Sometimes you drop points against teams you least expect, and sometimes you grab 3 points from teams you least expect.

We need a performance, to build some confidence. Results will follow.

I just hope Ange reigns things in as albeit we’ve holes in the squad, we’ve a very capable squad who can most definitely fight for a top 4/5 finish with the right coach.

It’s like we’ve gone from one extreme (ultra defensive) to another (ultra attacking). We’ve finally got a squad that with a mixture of tactical nous, discipline and creativity can deliver an improvement on last season but at the same time they risk dropping points for fun if Ange sticks with his at times, suicidal tactics.

Does seem that ange is happy enough which of course is important.

But I do think a club of this size has to show more ambition.

I love the younger signings and it's great to look to the future but that's the issue, sometimes the future never comes.

I am not proposing we sign loads of 70m players etc but we do need some significant upgrades and gaps filling.

Currently we are still light on:
LB cover
AM alternative
CM high tempo

We didn't get that winger that is likely to take us up a notch either so really are relying on Son to step up and Odobert to be more than a prospect.

We still need a back up keeper, a pacey LB/LCB, an experienced DM and another 1v1 winger

And shift Forster Solomon GLC Reguilon

4 in 4 out

Completely agree but think we can now wait on the winger signing for next year for re-evaluation of targets and with Yang coming in January

You can say we need cover in certain positions and maybe a true number 6 but the truth is none of this stops us being awful off the ball. We need a plan for tactical fouls, slowing play up we just don’t seem very street wise. Back in Poch’s time everyone seemed to know when to foul and whose turn it was to do one.

We are so easy to play through hope Ange realises soon.

Whilst you are correct, it was only a short time ago we had England Captain, France Captain, Danish Captain and captain of South Korea all in our team. It didn’t make us devoid of problems.
I’m happy with the squad, I think we can do well.
Whether or not we do that with Ange, I’m not convinced. I really like his personality and admire his football morals, just not entirely convinced things will work out, or if he will be afforded the time to work them out.
