The Premier League have responded negatively to this.

The final part of that article is quite telling and funny at the same time..

"There is no mention of Aston Villa and Newcastle United, both of whom have featured in more Premier League campaigns than Manchester City. "

I thought it was odd in the original Telegraph article, there's no way Man City have been one of the 9 established Premier league clubs. Ergo this does appear to be a cynical ring fencing and power/money grab.

I would imagine the 18 clubs thing is to cut down on fixtures in order to allow more room for an expanded champions league. I’m not too bothered about that, or the other suggestions. It’s the concentration of power at the top of the game that I don’t like. If all 18 prem clubs have an equal vote then I think the rest of it is pretty sensible. Especially getting rid of the community shield, and the European teams not entering the league cup.

edit I’m not keen on the loan rules either. Personally don’t think prem clubs should be allowed to loan to each other.
That wasn't the point I was making though, Tucks.

I was highlighting the arbitrariness of the nine 'ever-presents', linking that with the fact that it was all a screen so that they can make sure Man City remain inside the tent.

The ability to veto new owners definitely comes from American sports, where its just an old boys club.

The whole thing is a power grab, opportunists taking advantage of a chaotic situation. Remind me how Abramavich made his money again ?

Yeah, the idea of Abramovich or Sheikh Mansour getting a veto on the suitability (financial/ethical/whatever) of newcomers is a joke.

The Americans leading this?

The same Americans, who in the MLS did half way line penalty shoot out one on one multi-ball. If the game was drawn.....hmmmm

This drops 4 games from the league and the League Cup games. All geared up for easier access to European football.
The smaller xlubs Will lose Gate money and the money.

As always the devil will be in the detail.

Also the clubs driving this both have American owners with big influence in the US too.

I'm trying to see the endgame here.

I bet there where many who said the same when the PL was established.
Probably were but the game is bigger now and now the clubs are trying to make it even less inclusive and its no wonder the American owners are trying to limit the game in to more a franchise model

I dont like it. For me other than the need for a winter break I don't want anything to change.

It’s all to do with the tv money. Liverpool owners have been pushing for them to have more and everyone else less since they bought the club. I remember a load of times they’ve brought it up since they bought the bin dippers.

The article seems to suggest that us, Woolwich, Chelsea and Man City would be on board with this but to me it just sounds like Man Utd and Liverpool are driving it. Don’t worry, it won’t have legs.

Anything in my book that Man United and Liverpool are 'jointly driving' would immediately lead me to be suspicious to say the least and maybe I'm prejudiced but I would be jumping to conclusions that whatever it was, if it was good for those two clubs and their hoards of plastic bandwagon jumping fans it would almost certainly not be good for the rest of us.

How about we tell two bunches of American businessmen, who've bought their way into our game, to fuck off? They are literally attempting to buy long term control of English football and place it in the hands of a tiny number of foreign businessmen.

The FA should take all the good ideas (capped away tickets, return to safe standing, abolishing the Charity Shield) and say thanks, then slam the door shut in their faces.

An absolutely brazen attempt at a heist, taking advantage of a global pandemic.

My favourite part is the absolute presumptuousness of this statement:

Liverpool and United are prepared for a fierce debate over their proposals but they want them implemented as soon as possible.

Yeah I'm sure you do, but here's another suggestion - how about you guys go fuck yourselves, you utterly brazen ****s?

FWIW it’s nothing to do with the FA. It will be the Premier League who decide whether it happens or not and for it to go ahead 14 of the existing 20 members have to vote in favour of it.

It would involve 5 clubs voting to have less say in the future. Can’t see what would be the appeal for them.
