Another disappointing display. We were continually moving forward but had very little in the way of chances. Certain penalty not awarded which could have opened the flood gates if it had been given. I have seen nothing yet from Doherty to suggest he is better than Aurier. Kane, Son and Berwijn were disappointing. Berwijn will not be impressing Jose and will slip down the pecking order if Bale arrives.

Just glad to get through tbh. These away ties to some unheard of central/eastern European team, played on cabbage patch pitches, are always difficult. I'm happier if we get home unscathed as much as the win.

Line drawn underneath it, back to proper football.

Seriously? He can defend, doesn't get caught out of position, doesn't get caught wrong side, and hasn't given away any stupid penalties. He is a massive upgrade.

Finally managed to see the penalty incident (not the Bergwijn one which should have been) again. Looks like Davies header could well have been over the line already. Did anyone see a goal line angle?

Their goal was shocking defending, 2 headers from the corner! What the actual F...

so were there any official highlights where you could see the game clearly or did every single transmission drop.

that's just not true. yesterday he got away with playing an offside line losing total control of the runner in behind the defense in an interior position which would have resulted in a decent finishing attempt had the opposing player not been barely offside (I'm not even sure he was, but whatever. also, the defense was all over the place, all defenders playing different depths, no way the offside trap was a viable defensive approach, he just got away with it) and he had a complete whiff on an attempt of stopping a 1-2 overlap, allowing the defender to turn and find the overlapping runner, also in an interior position, allowing a dangerous dribble opportunity towards the goal area.

from the Everton game, he got caught out several times too deep inside trying to tag the striker out with the ball on the opposite flank, allowing several (we're talking 5+) cross field passes to Richarlison who was able to receive freely and attack him 1v1. thankfully Richarlison was wasteful as fuck that day.

this is just off the top of my head, I'm sure there were other instances where he was at fault defensively. which is expected, he has played alongside 3 center backs for a while now, under another regime with a different defensive approach, so there are gonna be some errors. but he hasn't exactly been stellar in my view, just hasn't had his miscues punished.

I prefer Doherty to Aurier, but let us not pretend that he is more than he is. Defensively he is very questionable, but most of us knew that. Still expect him to be better than Aurier overall - and he gives us more height to defend set-pieces with.

Going forward he has already shown that he will whip crosses in properly. Aurier's crossing isn't exactly brilliant even if he has his odd moments. And Doherty will score goals. The chance against Everton shows the kind of movement you will never see from Aurier.

All in all I'm just happy we have proper competition for the time being.

forgot the total whiff on a James early cross to a Richarlison back post header that again, wasn't capitalized by the former.

Just watched the whole lot again ....
I saw us not get out of third gear and still Dominated possession ( as expected) , created a load of opportunities and half chances in spite Of them camped in their half.
Liked PEH stirring in front of the back 2 instead of chasing around like superman.
Gio and Tanguy getting a run out and looking decent (until gio tired)
Front three still static but I think just trying to get thru game so fresh for Sunday.
Standard early round Europa friendly pace really .
Take the 2-1 and leg it .

Did they end up with any footage of the red cards? That's the only bit I've not seen

so the direct red was the result of an handball on the goal line on a Ben Davies header that was about to score. the second yellow, taking from Mourinho's words, was the result of a player trying to dig a hole on the penalty spot before Kane took it. I believe that player was about to be subbed off too.

I've just watched the highlights and I could see a least 3 chances (2 being sitters) where we could have scored and put the game into bed.

We are only creating problems to ourselves. If we had taken our chances that game would be a bus ride at the park.
