No news on Devine in here since the red and the sacking.

Anyone hear anything?

Him and Phillips have been back at Spurs since Plymouth's season ended. They even played in the post-season friendly vs Newcastle in Australia and are probably now on Holiday.

Was decent. I do find him a bit wooden, lacking in the ability to pivot well, and one footed. Tends the play the way he’s facing.

For me, he’s the least likely to succeed between Moore, Donley, Lankshear, Hall, and maybe even Philipps. Don’t think he quite cuts it at our level.

Would love to be proven wrong.

Why? What have you got against the others?

I actually thought he was the pick of the bunch of our youngsters yesterday. I very much expect to be part of a tiny minority who think that, but despite not catching the eye through dribbling or scoring/assisting, in the way the others did, I thought he used the ball really intelligently. The other young attackers did more flashy stuff, but they made more mistakes than Devine, to my eyes at least. I just felt, every time Devine got on the ball, he was going to make a good decision. Him and Gray really impressed me.

He’s very technically polished and his first touch and passing ability is very good. He might not be a superstar but he’s exactly the kind of midfielder who I’ve thought was nailed on to be a PL level player at the very least for a while because of how technically sound he is. He’s very much another Winks, Skipp, Livermore type of talent with a higher floor and lower ceiling than some others we have. I think he’s slightly more talented than that group though.

Rank - in terms of floor and ceiling:

Bentancur
Bissouma
Sarr
Gray
Maddison
Bergvall
Kulusevski

I, personally, would say Devine has a lower floor, and a lower ceiling than all of them - even accepting that some would play a different role.

I don't see where he realistically gets any minutes with those players ahead of him.

He is not going replace Bissouma in the deep role.

And then for the players who play in the more advanced roles, he is behind all of them.

I was talking about him more in terms of how he ranks amongst our other academy players. I wouldn’t rate him close to Bergvall or Gray either. I do think he’s still likely to be a PL level player though. I agree maybe that won’t be here but he’s a quality young player, his competition to get in our team is another point altogether that I didn’t go into.

The more I watch him the more I think he might stay this season rather than go on loan. Especially if we also sell Skipp and Lo Celso. Although he may want to go out on loan and guarantee game time but I think with the added Europa League games there will be enough games for him to play in the first half of the season at least and then reassess in January.

He's a very tidy player and has a really good eye for a pass and the ability to execute it.
Didn't he used to play further forward, almost a 10 but dropped further back during his loan and settled into the role really well?

Yeah he first came in as a CAM.

Can we afford to loan him out again if we want him to be club trained?

Either way think he can be a good option off the bench now, very composed with a no nonsense demeanor.

He joined July 2020 and his first loan was August 2023, so he has already fulfilled the required 3 years to count as club trained.

If he stays he can be regiusted on "List B" aka U21 list, so wouldn't even take up a squad space.

another solid showing from alfie. no fuss, just moves it quickly and efficiently

(credit goes to @HugoFilmz for the vid)

I'm always supportive of our youngsters coming through and he played a couple of good balls forward, but I'm not seeing anything that Winks didn't do with us.

I think I'd need to see more about what he's like under a proper press and if he can do more than just recycle it - hope so.

How does he compare to Conor Gallagher?

Devine is more creative and is a better passer - Gallagher has far better goal scoring instincts/ times his runs well and has a really good work-rate.

I can see why Ange would want to sign CG, as he's already proven that he can perform in the league. I would rather see us stick with Devine, as he's not significantly far away from developing/improving on those additional attributes that can see him thrive in Ange's system.

Exactly what Ange is looking for
My real question around him in that 8 role is more on the defensive side. Can he develop the pressing and tackling side of his game. I would also like to see him carry the ball a bit more when the opportunity arises but his passing range and selection fits nicely into the role.

I'm not so sure. He plays passes exclusively to feet, never into space. We need more movement from players off the ball, but that won't happen unless the players on the ball regularly pass to runners, not to players standing still and facing them.
