I posted this in the 'What our opponents fans are saying about us' thread, but thought I'd throw it in here as well for a bit of context:

Re. West Ham fans saying that not long ago they were on par with us...

Their 100 year league highlights consist of:

-One 3rd place finish (1985-86)

-One 5th place finish (1998-99)

-Er, that's it

To be fair, they are a well-known club in the UK, but that masks the fact that they're basically a mid-table or relegated outfit and have been for most of their history.

It's pretty astonishing that some (most!) of their fans think that they're anywhere near the top-table of football. They've NEVER had a period of sustained success!

Zaha is English though, having spent all but the first four years of his life in England. And he is also Ivorian. Apparently dual nationality is a tricky concept to grasp for some.

Yes, I know this post is a bit of a Buzz Killington.

He was born in the Ivory Coast, therefore he’s Ivorian. Regardless if he’s lived here for over 20 odd years.

I was born in England but have lived 20 years of my life in Norway. I hold dual citizenship, so I am both English and Norwegian. The same way Zaha is both English and Ivorian.

Born in England, you’re English, same as me. I’m moving to Canada at some point. If I live there 20 years I’m not going to consider myself, Canadian.

Zaha is Ivorian and qualified as English on a technicality.

The principle of dual nationality is very important to me and I fear if I go further with this the thread will not only be derailed but turn quite ugly too.

But I disagree wholeheartedly with the idea that a kid who was brought up and has received all his education in England only qualifies as English "on a technicality".

Good for you. He’s Ivorian. You’re English.

I've just been on the Kumb website to see what they made of our performance last night and they have come out with some absolute gems of insightful and intelligent punditry and so called wit, here are just a few of them :
1. Spurs v Dortmund is the equivalent of Bournemouth v Brighton?
2. Fellow Poster referring to 1 above, you're being generous, I thought Spurs were the Champions League equivalent of Hemel Hempstead.
3. Spurs aren't that great and always seem to get the rub of the green, just enough to nick a win.
4. And to think not that long ago we were on a par with them, now they are streets ahead of us.

My response to 1 above - If that's the case, what's the equivalent of the Uefa Cup qualifying tie known as Spammers v Astra Giurgiu from Roumnia?

My response to 2 above - If we are the Champions League equivalent of Hemel Hempstead, what are the Spammers the Champions League equivalent of? Oh I forgot, they've never been anywhere near that competition.

My response to 3 above - since when has a 3-0 win ever been described as 'just about nicking it'? Against the best team in the Bundesliga currently and they are also Champions League finalists?

My response to 4 above - When in recent times have the Spammers been consistently 'on a par with us'? I would like the Spammers who frequently claim we're hated by many other fans because 'we think we are better than we are' to explain that one.....
And to think that they think we are deluded. Are they strangers to mirrors? Maybe they should take a good look in a big one....

Back on track you two!

From KUMB:

"Spurs are annoyingly consistent at the moment. To think, not that long ago we were on a par with them, now they are streets ahead sadly"

How long ago are you referring to? Certainly not in the last decade!

"Spurs v Dortmund is the CL equivalent of Bournemouth v Brighton. "

What are you on mate?

"as I said, there's Mr. Poch after spending nowt, got his team 5 points behind every redtop and meedja outlets darling mischievous Scallies AND going into a knock out round after beating the Bundesliga's top team 3-0

he's a very good manager I don't care what anyone says about him not winning shyte.

spent less than most of his peers and his team is in Europe 3 consecutive seasons (don't think they have done that before or if they have, then for a long time) but everyone is jerking off over the toothy Kraut.

sorry is that racist or that ? "

West Ham and their fans should trying keeping their heads down and working hard on consistently finishing 7th or 8th place.

They should also improve their infrastructure, coaching and scouting set-up.

Also, their player trading needs to be more sustainable.

They always give it the 'big-one' at the start of every season, instead of quietly going about their business building the foundations to become a solid club for the next couple of decades.

Less mouth and more hard graft lads (y)

If anything I reckon that makes him more English than Ivorian. He probably doesn't even remember being in the Ivory Coast if he moved to England when he was a small child.

There's a massive difference between what you're saying and his situation. It's one thing if you've lived until you're 30 then move to Canada, in that instance I would never consider myself Canadian either, but if you were born in one place but then as a 2 year old and then moved to Canada and lived there for 20 years then IMO that would make you more Canadian than anything because all of your memorable lifetime would've been spent in Canada so you'd feel more Canadian than if you moved there as an adult.

Can't agree more, I posted similar quotes, these posters are so deluded and deeply prejudiced about Spurs that they can't or won't allow themselves to see the truth for what it is, which is why they refuse to acknowledge anything positive we ever do or achieve and they never will. They can't even see the irony in the assertions they constantly make about us thinking that we are better than we are.

I think he can be whatever he identifies as. The longitude and latitude of your mother when she pops you out is not in any way important. If you're born at sea does that make you a fish?

Nationality is a weird one. People often moan about immigrants coming in and not assimilating with British society.

Then when a second or third generation Brit with family from a different nation feels British and competes for us they get accused of ignoring their roots.

They really can’t win can they?

What are the roots of any of us Brits ? We are all a real mixture of Celts, Scandinavians, French and many other races.
