Gerrard rarely got close to his club form for England. The Lampard/Gerrard thing didn't help but I always felt Fat Frank did a bit better. I think his best performances were in qualifying for the SA world cup when he played on the left, unfortunately come the tournament he didn't stick to it (tactics or he just didn't fancy it?) and he spent all the time in the middle unbalancing the team.
Disagree, I think if there was any player in that generation, after Beckham, who worked his balls off, it was Gerrard. Scored some vital goals too.

But ultimately rarely transformed his club form for his country.

He's a number of players who just epitomised the golden generation, our top teams were mixing it with the best in the CL and the English core would always stand out but when it came to England they flattered to deceive.

Because they were too petty worrying about club rivalries and didn’t have each others back. It’s so weak from them and the management. They should of put it behind them and if the manager realised it was a problem then he shouldn’t have selected those players, whoever they were. Maybe then we’d of done better.

100%.

I don't know how much of the blame rests with internal disharmony and rivalry and how much rests with poor team selection, especially the decision to ram in as many world class stars as possible. All I know is that the '02-'06 England team could've and probably should've won something. We were world class in basically every position for most of that decade.

Our exits from all three tournaments during '02-'06 were dubious (I don't believe Ronaldinho was actually trying to chip Seaman) and with better management, I don't think we would've been in the positions to make those mistakes in the first place.

On paper, I believe we were in the top 2 or 3 favourites at each of those tournaments -- in 2002, for example, the only clearly better team was one of the best Brazil sides of all time. In fact, we were probably on paper top 3 for 2008, which we somehow didn't even qualify for, as well as maybe 2000 and 2010. I'll leave the '90s out of the discussion but '96 and '98 were huge opportunities too. Nobody can say England hasn't massively underperformed in the last 30 years, and getting to a semifinal in a relatively soft fashion last year doesn't come close to making up for it.

He was England player of the year twice though, and in the top three on three other occasions. It might be a low bar, but he was often one of the best that we had in the team.

The point was 'Gerrard rarely got close to his club form for England.'

Despite those accolades the statement is true.

Agree. He may well have been good for England when all's said and done, but he was still very very rarely on the same level as he was for Liverpool. Not saying that was entirely his fault, and the fact that he wasn't the only one suggests it had a lot more to do with the way the team was run, but that doesn't make it any less true IMO. Being voted the player of the year in a team that has gone down in history for being serial underperformers isn't necessarily that much of an accolade.

I think with Gerrard he was always used poorly for England.

Lampard should have been dropped, as for me Gerrard was more of an international player and should have been played more centrally.

Although nowadays perhaps they could of both played in a 4-3-3 with a holder alongside them? Not sure if we ever tried that as 4-3-3 wasn’t quite the in-thing as it is now?

There were several occasions where pundits and public were suggesting a 4-3-3 with Hargreaves or Carrick holding, but it just never happened. Sven was obsessed with playing two strikers, so that was a non-starter, McClaren was just generally inept and Capello didn't appear to give a toss.

I think also the quality of wingers we had at the time meant managers didn't really consider them. Especially on the left there was nobody any good.

It was ball to hand mate! The referees are corrupt. Sign the petition to have that referee banned from all Liverpool games from now until the end of time!

Durham asking why fans don't want Pool to win the PL, pool fan phones in with 2 reasons...

"1 if we win the PL, we'll be the best football team in the world, 2 it'll be so BIG that the entire city will celebrate and it will be nothing that the country has ever seen"

And that's why people don't want you to win it

Sent a Liverpool fan into a fit in the office today, all I said was that I fancied Leicester as they know how to win the prem...

Five mins later he was still muttering about number of titles they've won in their history

Liverpool are in talks to sign RB Salzburg's Takumi Minamino in January.

The 24-year-old has a £7.25m release clause in his contract, which has alerted a number of Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A clubs, so the Reds have accelerated their interest.

Bargain.

They're managed so incredibly well. Really envious of their recruitment process and staff.
