Why do we not seem to have a basic defensive shape for when the opposition have their 10 minute spell?

It's like the whole team go into hyper-drive, but completely uncoordinated. Ten outfield players charging about like 5 year olds on Haribo getting picked off one-by-one until Albert Steptoe has a free header at the far post.

Someone has to give the signal for us to drop deeper and get solid until they run out of ideas. We're just so get-attable.

Our only defensive strategy seems to be our whole team gung-ho pressing.

There doesn’t seem to be any work on actual defensive structure when they have possession in our final 3rd.
Or any sensible heads covering spaces in dangerous areas when everyone goes charging to try and turn the ball over.

We dominated with 9 players it's true for 40 mins. We didn't dominate because of Son or Johnson that's for sure
Son had a good first half, and faded. The bigger issue for me is leadership, we have a team of experienced internationals who just seem to implode for spells when the going gets tough

Concerned with the defensive setup and coaching. Individually we have good defenders but in the team they are rabbits caught in the headlights. That’s down to tactics and coaching for me. Maybe a decent holding midfielder would help but I’m not sure

And another thing that annoyed me, Porro hobbling around for the best part of 5 mins and we’re after a winner, and dilly dallying around and taking too long to make the substitution, instead of then facilitating it Porro then wastes a further 2 mins of precious injury time by delaying it more by taking the throw. If he’d not picked up the ball and thrown back into play it would have been an extra 2 mins of 11 v 11 instead of 10 v 11 because Porro is hobbling around and not enabling the substitution to take place.
It’s the really small details like this where the really top teams will be switched on like this to wring out every possible advantage to get over the line.

Only thing that really sticks out for me, aside from the late subs, untaken chances and Porro debacle, is the mentality.

As soon as they scored, we switched off completely. Mentality of a bunch of petulant kindergarteners, they got frustrated and switched off, especially Madders who immediately made a stupid foul. No leadership to calm things down and reset.

What a shocker of a game that turned into.
If you read my posts in this thread the problems started long before the Leicester equaliser and Ange did nothing about it. The problem then turned from tactical to mental.

Do you really believe we don’t work on defensive structure? It’s frustrating but so many generalisations are made after a result that wasn’t what we deserved

There’s no real way to sugar coat a loss to that Leicester side. It feels like a match you need to get 3 points, even if it’s at the KP. But, the reality is 3/4 of our backline is still getting up to speed, and a lot of our struggles did come from Udogie being sloppy, which is understandable given how long he was out and also his age.

That game should have been over at half, it wasn’t, and Leicester took advantage of a poor moment. Yeah, it’s the same issues as last year, but you have to think we will get better this year given the depth/competition, as opposed to starting shit hot until we succumb to fatigue/injury.

I’m not losing faith, yet. It’s a really tough start to the season and the schedule only gets more tough, but it’s far too early to write off the season.

Would I have taken a point before ko? Yea probably, there’s always generally a surprise on the opening weekend and it was set up for us to deliver.
However, to not be at least two up at HT was criminal, we go in at two up and they ain’t coming back into it.
Same story as last season, not turning half chances into goals and wanting to walk the ball into the back of the net, Son had two or three opportunities in the first half when he cut inside at about 20yds and didn’t have a pop.
I just don’t understand why we don’t shoot, it’s just baffling

Bergvall & Gray both if not starting need a lot more minutes, they may be the future but on tonights evidence need to be the present, the honeymoon period well and truly over for the manager,he's been properly backed and needs to deliver.

What makes it worse we actually had an actually right back on the bench. It's madness

Brennan Johnson has no excuse other than whoever signed him should be sacked. Absolute garage.

Son is a legend of the club but he seems to have lost pace and I hate to see him struggling.

Gray and Lucas B looked really good

Kulu should be starting.

We need bakayoko For rw, Ederson for dm, a lcb/lb and if we want to win something offload richy for Gyokeres.

otherwise this is a 6th/7th place finish this year.
Come on , garage is a bit strong

The one positive I can take is at least we can use this disappointment as a wake up call.

Hope springs enternal.

Top calibre teams who compete for honours don't melt like that against, let's be fair, substandard opposition who've got a litany of issues hanging over them.

Goals can happen - that's football - but honestly, the response from our players was utterly shocking and for me eradicates almost all of the good facets in the first half because that mental fragility will rear its head time and again and we will continue to not learn any lessons and pay the price.
