Saw this article on how last night's game highlighted 2 CB options for Capello

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...apello-centre-back-options-for-World-Cup.html

That'll be King and Daws I thought. Nope King and effing Judas. A lot of praise for King here:

"Not for the first time those watching were left to reflect on the big ‘what if?’ where King is concerned. Had the Spurs defender enjoyed an injury free career surely he would have eclipsed even Ferdinand as England’s finest exponent of the defender’s art. Sadly, such a debate is relegated to the hypothetical."

Then there's a section on the other contenders. Ah right here comes Daws our inspirational captain who has played nearly every game this season for a side that has been in the top 4 for most of it and has the best home defensive record in the league. Nope. Don't know why I'm surprised any more :bang:

Other contenders:

Joleon Lescott
A regular member of the squad in his Everton days Lescott’s move to Manchester City has not been without its problems.
Phil Jagielka
In terrific form for Everton before injury wiped out much of this season. Back playing now and working his way back to that level though maybe just short of time to impress.
Ryan Shawcross
A towering presence in both boxes for Stoke and definitely one for the future. Called up for England’s friendly with Egypt but was an unused substitute.
Matthew Upson
Capello’s go-to man in the event of Ferdinand or Terry’s absence of late and would be disappointed to miss out. Has had a difficult season with West Ham.
Gary Cahill
Part of England’s squad for the World Cup qualifying victory over Kazakhstan in June last year but an outside bet for South Africa at best.
Wes Brown
A versatile, experienced defender who could also fill in at right back but still unavailable for Manchester United and unlikely to make the cut.

While I am not Dawson's biggest fan I think he has been great this year and should at least deserve a call up just for his form alone. Upson has been awful this season and form should count for something, especially when considering subs and squad depth.

Wes Brown?? The guy who barely plays over Dawson is a joke. Although I do like his talents as a do it all sort of guy just think with the talent in the team and the shortness of the tournament, its not like it is 5 months long, could be as short as a couple of weeks if England don't play well and score goals without Rooney so don't really see the need for a jack of all trades sort of player but I could be wrong and depth could be the difference between the quarter finals and winning the whole thing.

Dawson is better than all, bar maybe Jagielka, but he still gets overlooked. I'm happy for that to happen though, if it means he goes into next season completely refreshed.

Think Daws gets overlooked because he's the 3rd best centre back at his club when everyones fit. Great pro and seems like a top bloke. If upson, Lescott and Jagielka were at spurs they'd be behind Dawson in getting a start. Fabio should pick Daws and King for the world cup.

Well if we are going by this season then Dawson has been far superior then the list shown there! Lescott certainly has performed like had done last season. Fair enough with Phil Jageilka as he hasnt had much of a season to prove himself, but I feel Dawson has certainly matched any efforts that Jags achieved last season performance wise, and Phil still managed to get into the England team.

Shawcross was doing very well at Stoke but his season has gone a bit pear shaped due to injury and also that unfortunate incident with Aaron Ramsey.

Matthew Upson has been a complete pile of horse wank this season IMO. He has completely gone off the boil for me this season for West Ham. Its actually quite worrying we might have both Green and Upson start for us in the world cup with such poor poor seasons behind them.

Gary Cahill has looked promising but once again I havent seen anything from him to suggest that he is outperformed Daws.

And finally, Wes Brown, well the only case I can make for him being in the squad is if we have a major injury crisis throughout the whole back four as he isnt the worst option to have as a full back either.

I was looking at the stats on SSN earlier about the top 5 of the season best tacklers, best interceptions, most headed clearances, etc etc, and Dawson was in all of them and in fact top of some of them tables infront of some of the best the league has to offer. If that doesnt make your mind up on him being in the England squad then surely that performance last night against the Gooners will. Hope he does it!

On skysports news the case was argued for Daws to go to the world cup, Daws and King were top 1+2 for most of the OPTA stats of the England contenders. Makes you wonder at times what Capello is looking at.

While its arguable if Daws would get in the world cup squad, he is definitely better than Upson, who just looks like a big lump.

I can see why Lescott and Brown will go, because they can fill in the fullback positions (although having seen Brown play right back for England recently I'm not sure his credentials are that great) but how players like Jagielka, Shawcross and Cahill have had a look in before Michael is beyond me.

This is tongue in cheek but I'm happy if none of our players go to the World Cup for their respective countries, purely so that they get a decent break and ready for the pre-season.

But ask any player what their ultimate dream would be and somewhere up there would be to represent their country at a World Cup Final.

Truthfully I would love to see Michael Dawson recognised by his country - he has matured this season and is a far better player than when he was last looked at over two years ago.

He does confuse me when he plays Heskey and Upson, keeps Green in goal and has Gerrard who's been out of form all season on the left.

Doesn't add up :duh:

To be fair it is all paper-talk

Capello has never said that Dawson definitely won't be going to the World Cup

I wouldn't be surprised if he's included in the squad and the media harp on about "The surprise inclusion of Spurs' Michael Dawson", or some such drivel

Dawson has been immense for us this season.hes probably the most improved player over the last season or two.
but...
i kind of worry though, how he would cope at world cup level,
i would presume he would only play if others got injured or suspended, which would mean him more likely playing at the later stages of the world cup.

that would mean Daws coming up against the top top strikers in world football .
and that sort of worries me,not only for England, but for michaels future,
if he got the runaround,it could put him back imo.

hes got a massive heart and is improving so much...but i cant see him coping with the likes of messi or Villa etc..the movment and pace at that level may undo daws.

hey i could be wrong... i like the way he's progressing..but i dont think hes ready for the world cup just because the alternatives(upson ,lescott etc) are no better.
let them go to the world cup, and get roasted.and we keep a confident dawson for next season, and hopefully he will improve more when plays CL footie for us next season.

To be Honest, I can see why Cappello would choose not to take Dawson and King infact...(personally I would take Daws)

Why No King...Risk......If one of his chosen 2, get badly injured etc. King inability to play games on the bounce, could create a problem.

Why the other over Daws, well namely Lescott Brown and Upson, is that they also can cover left / right back, therby giving Cappelo the option of taking an extra midfielder.

Daws is only 26. Over the last 2 yrs he has significanlty improved, If he keeps it up, I think he may well see him being an England player for the Euro and the next WC...

Hi ELY

I understand what you are saying, but the hi lighted points for me show why it would be a great thing for Us is Dawson went to the world cup.

Just say we get CL football next year, the experience that Dawson would get hopefully getting soem game time and playing against the best players in the world, well you cannot buy that experience.

It would mature him even more, and he would come back more knowledgeable about defending against great players.

Or it could backfire the way you have written it?

 i'm pretty sure that's how Michael Dawson will be looking at it mattyspurs - as a big challenge.

He should go to the world cup. I would argue in terms of form and consistency, he's been the best English centre half this year bar none.

If any of that list get on the plane ahead of Dawson, I will pick another fucking team to support. After Capello watching Daws a number of times this season, how he is not best of the rest I will never know. Especially with hi aerial ability, and added composure he now shows on the ball.

Come on Capello, don't make me support the Dutch.

yea i know what you mean mate

im just worried that a bad experience, would damage his confidence that he has built up,and confidence is so important.
you could however be correct..and he gains some positives.
hey...i would be so happy for him.

as you can see,im a massive roberts fan,and dawson is kind of like him.
he would also run through a brick wall for the cause..
but robbo was found wanting at international level...hope it dont happen to daws....but i worry.

maybe if he plays in the CL..he might add that little extra you need at international level.rather than the other way round.

Dawson is probably the most improved centre back in the Premiership and any journalist or so-called pundit who doesn't recognise his undoubted skills doesn't know their football.

With Dawson in our defence, it's usually solid. When I think back to how awful our defence was just a few seasons ago, the overall improvement is impressive and much of that is down to how Daws is maturing: he is most certainly worthy of international selection.

because Dawson plays for a good attacking team that has the lions share of ball and territory in most games, he already plays football more akin to international that the rest on that list anyway. He has to contribute more to possession and attacking football that they ever do. He has long spells where he’s not involved in the action compared to the others which puts a different mental pressure on a player.

Even when England play the best teams in the WC wed still be in possession of the ball and on the front foot more than West ham or Stoke or Bolton. Dawson good form this year actually points towards him being much better suited to international football than the best of the rest.

As for King? He doesn’t have to play 7 games in 28 days he might not need to play one but if Rio or Terry got a knock or a suspension in the semi final.. who out of all the CB’s available would you trust to bring straight into a final? Ledley King. That’s a dramatic scenario but it would apply to any of the knock-out rounds and King is the only correct answer. Fans of teams that hate us say King is the best let alone a plethora of pundits, managers and journalists.

I think King is going, I think in Capello’s mind King has always been going. Why do I think that? Because Cappello is superb at his job.
