Arsenal and Spurs boosted in chase for £8 million striker

Arsenal - Kevin Gameiro has wanted to leave Lorient for six months now

Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro has re-iterated his desire to leave the French club, with Arsenal and Tottenham waiting in the wings.

Gameiro told French football paper L’Equipe he has wanted to leave for six months and, according to reports in his homeland, Bordeaux are favourites to land him.

However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has a good relationship with Lorient after bringing Laurent Koscielny to the Emirates Stadium in the summer.

During negotiations, the Gunners boss is thought to have made his interest clear while Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp was also interested last summer.

Arsenal will be put off by the £8 million asking price, especially with his contract running out in a year and a half.

Marouane Chamakh had a similar situation and the Gunners were not willing to part with any money and eventually landed him on a free transfer at the start of the season.

Spurs, though, could be dark horses as they search for world class players to strengthen their push for the latter stages of the Champions League and a title challenge.

Other top teams are likely to rivals any bids from Arsenal and Tottenham, with AC Milan rumoured top be in the hunt.

Gameiro told L’Equipe: “It's been six months since I have wanted to leave, so that is not why I'm playing badly. When I score, you do not speak of my desires to leave.”

Intriguing. Is he strong enough to hold the ball up though? My first thought is that he looks a bit too similar to defoe/Pav.

To be honest at £8m he'd probably be worth a punt as a replacement to Keane. If you look at his age we could bed him in for a year and then move on Pav next year for a similar fee and end up with a younger player at no real cost. It doesn't mean we cannot still go for another striker as with Defoe 27, Pav at 28, Crouch 29 and Keane 30 (i think) bringing in a couple of 22-25 year old strikers would be in Levy's interest and moving out 2 of crouch, Pav and keane - depending on the styles of the replacements - would be a good plan.

Tottenham are reportedly hot-on-the-heels of France striker Kevin Gameiro but will have to stump up £9m for the 23-year-old.

The former Strasbourg forward currently plays in Ligue 1 for Lorient and has also attracted interest from Italian giants Juventus, with them and Spurs both planning a summer bid.

Gameiro has hit 17 goals this season in only 26 appearances, while he has also been capped twice for France.

Lorient are reportedly experiencing financial difficulties which could force the club to sell their highly-rated hit-man.

Actually watched Lorient on Saturday, he scored a hattrick. Was all set to join Valencia in January, not sure why it didn't happen but he'd be a good buy imo.
