'Giovani didn't have the intensity to play for 90 minutes'. What, and Eriksen did? He came off after 70 minutes anyway having spent most of the game hiding. By contrast, the intensity shot up when GLC and Lamela came on.

I like that interview because it shows that Mourinho recognizes what both Lamela and Lo Celso bring to this team, he just doesn't feel like they possess yet the fitness level to bring that for the whole 90 minutes.

I would have preferred GLC for the first 70 mins rather than Eriksen

Because the game plan was to let Liverpool come at us first, stay tight, stay in the game and then add the intensity late on. It's much easier that way than starting with the intensity, and burning out after 60 mins. Liverpool would have finished stronger that way for sure and we're not ready to be taking it to teams of that quality to start with. Seen as both Lo Celso and Lamela are not fully conditioned for 90 mins (Lamela injury & Lo Celso PL condition) it was better to bring them on when we could open the game up and get at Liverpool. If they'd have started it's likely that our intensity levels would have dropped (like they did against West Ham, Bournemouth) and we'd have been ripe for being picked off - Liverpool have ended a lot of games strongly.

Winning mentality seems to correlate with walking into already excellent squads and then having the GDP of a nation to spend further in that squad.

Not that I'm cynical or owt...
