The forwards aren’t out there. Even the elite forwards aren’t worthy of lacing Kane’s boots, we were spoilt for ten years.
How is Gyokeres classed as an elite forward these days, he was playing for Coventry last season and has had one good season in Portugal!
I’d sooner put Veliz and Parrott on the bench than spend £40/50m on a forward who isn’t any better than Richie.
Judging from just the Euros, I really like Fullkrug, old school #9
He’s the only modern day “fox in the box” I can think of (assuming we ignore Weghoust)

Old school centre forward is not the same as a fox in the box, even a modern day one.

Strikers are typically foxes in the box, centre forwards are battering rams heading everything and smashing the centre forwards.

Lineker was the striker and fox in the box

That's how I grew up in the 80s mate. Centre forward, striker, centre half, full backs, centre mid, wingers.

Little and large wingers back in the day not too dissimilar to crouch and Defoe.

In truth most most top teams now have versatile forwards more than centre forwards. Spain are dominating largely because of Williams, Yamal and Olmo/Pedri. They don't have a top centre forward. Real Madrid are largely going through Bellingham, Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr while Mbappe is about to join. Even before Haaland City were still dominant while Liverpool were mostly going through Mane and Sala. If anything a traditional number 9 is a good alternative or plan b favoured by having a front 3 who can switch among one another. I think I'd rather start Son up top and improve the wide positions than get a centre forward who isn't top quality.

You must be from a a more progressive thinking football area than I was then. Striker was/is just another way of saying centre forward for the 50 years I have been playing, watching and coaching at various levels. It wasn't until the Fifa and FM games came around that every slight difference in style of play needed it's own name tag.

Absolutely… these were the only ways to describe a Centre Forward.

There just aren't enough numbers! A 10 or a 9 is all we've got and Kane is clearly a 9.3 whereas Richy is a 10.5. It's grossly unfair and means we have to use acronyms which are far less satisfying. SS, CF, ACM, S, WF, pfft.

Put the acronyms on player shirts like F1 drivers used to have their blood type

I played lots of CM/FM and FIFA in the 90s and 2000s and these terms didn't exist then. I think it's more of a YouTube and social media thing.
