Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has told under-fire manager Martin Jol that his job is safe but has warned him he wants to see Spurs in the Champions League.

Levy said in a statement: "We are an ambitious club and we have discussed our expectations with Martin.
"For that we need our management standards to be of the highest quality so that we can compete with the best. "Martin has confirmed to me that he feels he is equipped with a squad and a determination to take the challenge."

Now whre in that direct quote does it have Levy stating that Spurs have to finish top four this season? Nowhere should be your answer. The operative word is ambitious.

We are an ambitious club and are striving for Champions league football. Well striving means aiming and piece by piece we are doing that - evidence provided by two top five finishes consecutively. We don't have a right to finish fourth. Levy knows that but he has a duty to remind our staff that that is our ambition. Which is what he has done.

Jol cannot lie on his laurels. Work is to be done for the next level. But it would be pointless and foolhardy for Levy to demand top four. And he hasn't.

Too much reading between lines going on. That's what being a journo is all abot - inventing and massaging a story.

What else you got Shelf?

The Board has never stated that a top four finish is a prerequisite. If they have and I've missed it please post the link with a direct quote please.

Yes they have:

Jol admitted that his conversations with Levy and the board had been "frank" and added: "It is realistic that we should look to challenge for a top-four position and I have assured him and the board that that is what I shall aim for."

He has been told he must qualify for the Champions League and make Spurs part of the “Big Four”.

There are loads.

A few days prior to this, Jol was quoted saying that he wasn't under pressure from the board to finish top 4. A direct contradiction to the above articles.

But you still haven't found that elusive quote from Levy stating that Jol has to give Spurs fourth position this season. There is insinuation and interpretation but not a direct quote. You are reading what you want to read.

BTW - i imagine both you and I "want to see Spurs in the Champions League" but it does not give us the right to expect it. You see the difference?

You're splitting hairs. Read the articles. It is quite clear that this was the objective proposed to him.

"It is realistic that we should look to challenge for a top-four position and I have assured him and the board that that is what I shall aim for."

I can't be much clearer than that - sorry.

You seem to be interpreting 'look to challenge for a top-four position' as 'look to achieve a top-four position this season'.

It's not a matter of splitting hairs. It's a matter of pisspoor comprehension on your part.

Look, I'm not debating that - where did that come from?

The original point, that you responded to, was that Jol said one thing, then a few days later the board and Levy contradicted it. Thats it.

Hence my response to whoever it was saying, 'but Jol says everythings cool' - or whatever. 'Take it with a pinch of salt.'

Followed by, 'the board have clearly lost faith - the club are just playing happy families at the moment.'

Read the articles SS57 then go fuck yourself... you are so tediously boring.

Finish top 4, challenge for top 4... whatever. Jol said he wasn't under pressure to perform then 2-3-4 days later Levy gave him a kick up the ass.

All I was saying is that Jol giving it lardy today doesn't mean FA. ...and the clubs statement is just 'happy family' visard.

Tell me you think the board are happy with Jol at the moment, and give me good reason to believe it.

Would you like me to forward that to the Oxford Dictionary of Humorous Quotations for you? I'm sure they're looking to add another example of witty repartée to their collection.

I have read the articles. I've also understood the articles. You haven't, either because you are incapable of understanding plain English, or because you have put a construction on them that doesn't exist except in your imagination.

Either way, we are not challenging for the champions league spot this season. Or any place in Europe...
