Finally, and in response to the tough demands of Tottenham, who paid 48 million euros to Betis for the Argentine, the green-and-white club will assume a payment of around four million euros - it could go up to five million with variables - and, in addition, will give Tottenham a preferential right over Johnny Cardoso , although not a percentage of a future sale as the English club intended. Thus, during the next year, if Betis receives an offer higher than 30 million euros for the American midfielder, the English club can match it and take over the services of the Betis player, who less than a year ago cost almost six million euros.

That doesn’t sound like a good deal at all…!

Underlines why we need to be cautious in handing out big contracts.

Flops on high wages are almost impossible to shift.

Presumably the player has some say in where he goes.

Mainly we need to sell before players enter their last year, even if the deal isn't so favourable. When you are in a situation that you "have to" sell the buyer has all the power.

I'm confused what we are actually getting here. What if Cardoso doesn't want to come?

Still don't know how I feel about this. It ultimately feels like a buy and loan back deal, but we have a lot more power.

Or less power? Who knows.

Anyone know anything about him?

Who am I kidding.

@Ghost Hardware

Let us know everything about him, including what his school exam results were.

Sorry lads, been at the Hampton Court rare car show this afternoon to deliberate ignore the transfer window.

Interesting player, def great defensively and solid in possession (comfortable carrying the ball). Not particularly spectacular passing tho but solid enough. Has been in and out of the squad at Betis, was a starter for much of last season after joining in Jan but has started this season on the bench. Still needs to become a key player for them. Is 22 and still needs to refine aspects of his game. A good prospect tho. I think it’s a clever move as it’s very likely he gets bought in the next two seasons but not sure I see him ending up here. He plays in a double pivot which isn’t a natural tactical fit.

edit - Seems we have a one year buy option rather and sell % option. I’m not entirely sure I see us triggering that as promising as he looks. I think a lot will depend on if he remains a rotation option for the season and how well he develops.

(During the international break I’ll try an write a full report if I have the time)

He has Carvalho ahead of him. Seems a very hard task for him to break into that team.

The way that announcement from Romano reads, with the agreement of the player, is that we'll probably sign the lad in Jan/July of next year. Looks an interesting prospect to be fair.

Well an interesting bit of business ultimately. May come to very little for us but I presume we’ve got stats on the player and there’s something we like about him. Will keep an eye out for him in the interim to see what happens I guess
