John Duncan RIP

[Archibald&Crooks]

Leading scorer three times in the 1970's, he was a 'proper' centre forward who scored pretty much a goal every two games at a time when we were a struggling side. I watched him score many of those goals. A key part of our promotion winning team. He was also manager of a Chesterfield side that was pretty much cheated out of an FA Cup final appearance when a late goal in the semi final against Middlesborough was unjustly chalked off.

That was the first game of the season, I was there too. He followed that goal up with both goals in a win against Notts County in our next home game.

good player modelled himself on Gilzean coming from Dundee - he was good in the air and elegant on the ground - I remember a header he got at West Ham from the edge of the box and of course another goal against the same opposition in the pouring rain at the Paxton end - under rated player

It was always great to see a Scottish player in our sides, they seemed to play with "fire in their bellies" and the team was usually better for that. The likes of Mackay, Gillie, Archibald and so many more.

Sad day, sad week. Remember the excitement in the shelf when he returned from injury and the chant ‘hello, hello Duncan is back’ reverberating around the ground as he took to the pitch. Class player and finisher who played with fire in his belly. Seemed to have so many more songs in those days too. RIP John.
