People will laugh but I love signings like this.

TOTTENHAM want to exploit Wigan’s crisis with a double swoop for England youth pair Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir.

Spurs have asked about the duo and the administrators running the Latics confirmed they have received an official approach for the 18-year-olds.

Striker Gelhardt is also wanted by Everton but canny Spurs want to take him to Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Tottenham scouts hope he could be groomed into the next Harry Kane.

Gelhardt has been given plenty of game time this season, making 17 senior appearances - mostly from the bench - and scoring once.

He's also got three goals in six caps for England's Under-18s.

Weir, son of Everton cult hero David, is also fancied by the Londoners, who want to snap up the pair cheap.

Brighton - who owe Wigan a sizeable sum if they stay up as part of the Dan Burn deal - also plan to raid troubled Wigan for Weir, where ironically, dad David is one of their scouts.

Midfielder Weir also has six caps for England U18s and made his senior debut earlier this season in the League Cup.

David Weir grew up in the 1970s and early 1980s.

He'll have watched a lot of Top of the Pops and listened to a lot of Radio 1 because, frankly, there will have been fuck all else to do in Falkirk.

He'll therefore have been highly familiar with the then popular DJ, David 'Kid' Jensen.

It therefore follows that David, at some point in his youth, will have thought 'He's a DJ and he's cool and his first name is the same as mine. If I have a kid, I'll call him Jensen. Then he'll be David's kid Jensen. That will be funny.'

Now, most people grow out of such infantile idiocies as they get older.

But David, it appears, didn't.

Truth be told, he probably still finds it funny now.

That's what I took from the story, anyway.

Anyone actually know if he's any good?

D H H I N B T T A ....

What in the actual fuck is this? Sorry, this isn't as good as @Archibald&Crooks cryptic's ...

P.S - David 'Kid' Jensen wore some of the worse jackets, indoors no less, of all time - and on T.V ... What a guy.

These sort of players are worth a punt all day, every day. England youth international, likely less than £5m, why not?

I really feel like our Youth setup needs to be brought to the forefront again. Just seems like we have fallen behind a bit, and I’d love to see some investment in new recruits. We have these beautiful accommodations/training facilities, time to put them to use from the First Team through the academy.

I definitely wouldn’t be against raiding some of these lower sides, then loaning back out where required. It’s worked well for Chelsea, and helps the home grown quota if they are a success.
You only need them to have one half decent season, the even if they don’t make the grade at Sours, they’re still likely to get a decent club afterwards, so decent sell on for us, and a career to be made at football for the player, win win.

The last time we properly raided a team in financial distress we got Robinson and Lennon from Leeds.

Obviously Wigan's plight is sad and a huge failure on so many levels but if we can profit from it and nab a few promising players, go for it.

From an article in the telegraph on Wigan

  • Tottenham Hotspur have had a bid for Alfie Devine and Jensen Weir, two of Wigan’s rising young stars, rejected.
