Are there any other centre backs with pace like Micky? I do worry that we can’t play like we want to (eg as high up the pitch) if he’s injured. And he’s definitely going to get injured.

His injury record is awful.

Purely from a profile point of view, I would love for us to have a look at Jayden Oosterwolde at Fenerbahce. Left sided centre back or left back at around 6ft 3 with pace to burn!

I think VDV is integral to how we play, and I worry about his hamstrings. Jorrel Hato at Ajax is another of a similar profile (these Dutch kids man honestly) but he would be extortionate and will want to be a starter…

Oosterwolde is still young, can learn from Micky and would have plenty of opportunity for minutes with his versatility. With Jose at Fenerbahce too, we know he has fancied Reguilon in the past and wonder if he could be involved as part of a deal…

43 apps last season, started every game this season, clearly getting experienced at this stage in his career, would represent a smart investment I feel…

Good shout. I’d noticed Oosterwolde. He’s an impressive athlete and defender.

I’m still unsure - only as I haven’t seen enough of him - about his technical ability given the drop off we have here already with Dragusin.

Tom Rothe at Union Berlin is hugely impressive in this respect. Has everything to be top class LCB/LB. His relative two footedness is just the icing on the cake, could potentially play across the back 4.

I might actually prefer him to Dorgu in terms of fit for us.

Though has only just left Dortmund and would assume take some convincing on a rotation / bench role.

There is young Irish striker only 17 playing for the same club we signed Josh Keeley from called Mason Melia. We should be all over signing him. He is going to be an absolute superstar. He has turned down Man City apparently. Hopefully we are watching him.

I'm of the view that we definitely still need a left footed right winger. A player that his primary position is to play there. I dont mind if it's someone young like Odobert, Yang etc but right now we have Brennan, who is doing great and growing in confidence and then arguably we have a bunch of right footed, left wingers who can all "do a job" on the right but don't really give us the options we need.

Werner's loan is going to end and Son is coming to the end of his career. Odobert, Moore and Yang have that LW sorted for potentially years to come but that RW troubles me.

Semenyo is a player I thought about the other day and seems I'm not the only one. 24 years old and was actually born in England, albeit playing for Ghana. Presumably he qualifies as HG in that case? 3 goals and 1 assist in 6 games and always seems to be the main danger man for Bournemouth. Played with Solanke before as well. Not sure I've watched enough of him to say for sure that he's the right profile but I feel like it would work and he'd be a good option to solidify our Winger options.

Googled him and seems we are being linked, albeit from weak sources at present:

Given the level of investment in ‘potential’ we have made, I’d actually only like to see 2-3 players coming in January/July. I’d like a period of stability now to allow these players to develop.

Need To Have

LB - and if they could play LCB that’d be fine, but primarily someone who can come in and challenge/cover Udogie in both style and athleticism.

RW - someone equally to challenge Johnson for the RW slot, unless Odobert is deemed the player. He seems to have been favoured on the left, where we already have Son, plus Moore emerging and an incoming player in Yang. I’m not counting Werner (loan) or Soloman.

Nice To Have

GK - maybe - Forster probably will go in the summer, if we don’t feel any of Austin, Whiteman, Gunter or Keeley are ready to step up, we
need to add a player here.

DM - maybe - Bentancur is such a Rolls Royce player, Bissouma could be great in that role, but currently has too many ‘moments’. If he can cut them out, him and Gray could mean we don’t need anyone. Further forward, Sarr, Kulu, Maddison and Bergvall I like, and we have Devine and Donley very highly rated who I’d like to see given opportunities before we look to add, if they impress on loan.

CF - again only a maybe - we’re starting to see the difference Solanke makes with not only his workrate, but also his goal scoring anticipation/instincts. Thursday and Sunday goals were successes of drive to follow in on other shots and finish. Does Richarlison have that all round game in him, does Veliz, does Lankshear. If the answer to any is yes, then happy to go with what we have.

Like the look of him but the best talent in the Irish league atm is Cathal O' Sullivan at Cork City imo

Also now pretty confident that Baena is literally the perfect competition for Maddison in the squad. Has the same ability to be creative both centrally and on the wing which is how our left 8 plays now.

Agree, big fan of his. Said the same in the Ange thread a few days ago. He has more assists than anyone in the top 5 leagues in 2024 with 13 after the Las Palmas game. What’s impressive about that performance you highlight is he only came on at half time, he didn’t even start the match. Very talented player.

I almost feel that it's pointless targeting highly rated young Spanish players.

Problem is our squad is still too large, although there is no problem for PL (as all U21s are not required to be registered), we don't have enough space to register new players for European competition, especially when we have Yang and Vuskovic coming in. Some of our current first team players would need to leave to free up squad spaces.

True. Guess there will be a few outs next summer:
  • Reguilon, Forster, Davies and Timo will all be out of contract. So that is presumably four out (although Reggie does not occupy a squad place for Europe).
  • Bissouma will have one year left. No idea if he will be offered a new deal, or if Ange would be happy to sell (keeping Bents/Gray as his DM options).
  • Then there is Richarlison, and who knows how he and Ange will view his situation next summer? Guess it also depends on how Veliz and Lankshear will develop this season.

Who is surplus to requirements?
Guessing we’d entertain offers for:
Richarlison
Forster
One of Austin/ Whiteman
Davies

And won’t retain Werner

doesn’t feel like a lot of room tbh

I think Biss might go next summer, just with the various little issues he has had and Bentancur looking good again.

Yeah I’d move him on bring in the betis player in the summer for a different kind of 6. So we have options. In some tight games away play a double pivot.
Sell biss,
Solomun (will never stay fit)
Gil
Richie (never fit)
Davies
Forster will be gone
Werner gone
Regs gone
Whiteman gone
Be interesting to see what we do with Sons contract surely we extend?

but we’ll need a 6 (Betis guy)
A lcb
Lb
Gk
A striker (if lankshear doesn’t kick on)
RW (would go all out here drop huge money if we can)
Baena (MADDs/Kulu rotation

Then our squad is pretty much sorted it
