Manchester United and Tottenham are on alert after Colombian winger James Rodriguez admitted he is keen on a greater challenge after his first season at Monaco.

The 22-year-old is set to star at the World Cup over the next month but has reportedly grown tired of the lack of top-quality opposition in France.

Rodriguez cost Monaco £35m last summer and the Ligue 1 side are sure to want to keep the talented youngster as they prepare for a Champions League campaign next season.

But reports in Portugal suggest that Rodriguez - who made his name at Porto - has set his heart on a move away before the start of next summer

Personally, I would love this signing, an absolutely class player who is capable of adapting many roles as well as scoring goals and creating chances. really can't see it happening though, average source and would cost far too much I think...But we can dream(y)

Fantastic player and someone who i think would absolutely shine for us.

But....

This is absolutely more a case of a "paper" tossing us into the mix to make a lean "story" seem more interesting.

Even if we wanted him, and he wanted to come to us, we couldn't afford him. He had a great year and will sell for more than they purchased him for.

Yep. No chance, going to be a superstar and completely out of our price range unfortunately. (n)

Would go for a ridiculous fee but a monumental upgrade on Lennon.

Not feasible for us but would hate to see him ply his trade at another Premier League club.

I very much doubt we even have a summer transfer budget of £35 million without selling players first.

Even if he wanted to come and we had the money, i'm not really sure where he would fit in. He plays best ether behind the striker or on the right cutting in like Lamela. Potentially we could move Eriksen out left as James is one of those players you find a way to get him into your team but realistically i cant see us even looking at him were he even available for a reasonable fee.

Maybe a constant swapping of the 3 of Lamela, Eriksen and Rodriguez over LW CAM and RW.. But still no chance ever

Didn't Monaco buy him in a deal with Moutinho, and inflate his price horrendously so that they could knock down Moutinho's, helping Porto reduce the amount they paid in a sell on clause?

If so, I'd guess Monaco wouldn't worry about selling him for less than they paid.

Could be worth enquiring, at least.

It's just not going to happen. Any team would love to have him, teams that are in more appealing situations than us right now.

Wanted him as the replacement for Bale (still delighted we got Lamela). Special player, disappointed he went to France.

Agreed. We have to catch players earlier, before the cusp of stardom. Moving from an astronomical metaphor, to compete with the big clubs we have to basically employ sperm scouts. Do we have any on our books? (Sounds messy)

Again (and again): Eriksen is not a wide player. He is - like Modric - a quality player, so almost anywhere you put them they will be doing well, but neither of them are wide players.
I used t have this arguemt over Modric when Harry palyed him wide and gosh did they "upset" on various boards. I maintaing the same with Eriksen, too; that his very best position is CMF.
Thus said, Spurs can't afford Rodriquez anyway. Besides, I think players from the Portogues league must be the mover over priced players in the world (I know James play in Ligue 1 now).

I know Eriksen plays best behind the striker, i was not suggesting that we should move him left. I wasn't a massive fan of his when he played on the left for Ajax and don't think we would benefit at all from playing him there. I was just saying hypothetically, if we did end up buying James then maybe Poch would push Eriksen out left. But as we will not be buying James as he is too expensive and will be looking for a bigger club then us its a moot point.
