Herc said was truth , im rolling with Herc
I said there was truth in the talks. I didn’t say there is truth we are closing the deal. I also said it was a Lange baby. These are all true. Him signing for us and Gio going the other way has been discussed, but that’s it.

It does kind of feel like a typical Paratici approach of having several plates spinning. Probably not our top priority but one we may push for as the window goes if we can't sign others.

He’s a good player. The profile suits the system as his strong suits are his finishing, line-breaking runs, powerful running/dribbling and he has a good understanding of what’s going on around him. However, he doesn’t offer defensively what he should and he’s carrying an injury.

Personally I would much rather see us pushing on Alfie or Hall this season than adding him in. It’s time we tried something different and we finally have a youth squad to match it. If Ange thinks different I’m OK with it as long as we give them good loans and don’t just block the pathway.
Great points as always mate although we probably do need someone like Ramsey who is ready made quality now as Gray, Bergvall etc are still pretty young and fairly raw even if they do both possess great quality.

Not that I know anything about this deal but it seems to make a lot of sense right, Villa have PSR issues, Lo Celso has worked under Emery previously, we want a new ready made CM and we need homegrown players, can see this one having legs tbh.

I don’t think I suggested viewing it in isolation nor am I’m suggesting he is like for like with GLC or anything like that. But in my view he does not have the attributes we are missing in those 8/10 midfield roles and he blocks the path for the many youth players we have coming through in that same position with some of the same attributes. We don’t have many squad places available at the moment, and being HG but not club HG doesn’t help us solve that problem, even if it helps with the resale value. The squad is already bloated with more than a few square pegs in round holes - i’m just not sure we need another one.
All fair points, and if we were just swapping GLC for Ramsey and calling it a day, our midfield would be looking bloated. I suppose the key factor is where Ramsey would fit in our midfield options by the end of the window, and maybe even the end of next summer to take a longer view.

I don't know much about Ramsey but he seems to fit the bill of a versatile midfielder in the same way Gallagher is. A lot of fans would prefer to have a creative player and a holding player like you say, but I do get the impression from Ange that he looks for the versatility and the mindset ahead of a specialist skill set. So if Ramsey is an Ange-style player then it feels like good long-term squad building to me, even if there are short-term compromises.

Another example of that is the association trained thing. I honestly don't think it's going to be much of a problem, and we would be better off having a Europa squad with 1 player missing than compromising our transfer business just to fill a quota.

So I totally get the idea of "we don't need another 8" but I get the impression that Ange just wants players who can be midfielders, and enough of them to make in-game changes and work around injuries with two games a week.

With news in the papers today that Villa want Lo Celso and him not even being on the bench surely we will insist on Ramsey in return.

We don't need another running around-midfielder. We need a dm, wideforwards and a backup to Udogie.

In a summer where Villa have been forced to sell players to balance the books so they do not risk breaching Profitability and Sustainability Regulations, selling Ramsey as “pure profit” because he is a homegrown player might have seemed tempting. The fact this has not happened says all you need to know about how highly Emery rates him.

Villa rejected a bid from Tottenham Hotspur and tentative interest from other clubs has been shut down, while any last-minute offers are expected to be rebuffed. Despite his lack of football last season, Ramsey’s status has not diminished.

“I was injured again so when these rumours were speculated the manager was still coming out and saying he wanted to keep me and stuff, so that was good to hear,” Ramsey says. “Regardless of if I was out of form or injured I knew I was part of his plans, so for any player to hear that is really good.”

And that external noise hasn’t distracted Ramsey from his purpose; to get back to full fitness and be the main man for Villa, the club he used to sit in the stands and watch with his brothers, mother and father from a young age.

“Because I was out for so long it’s weirdly made me believe in myself so much more,” he says. “Normally if you play games you believe in yourself, but I’ve gone the opposite way. Having so much time on my own, it’s given me time to think.”
