I am not convinced by the argument that he’ll stay at Villa if they get promoted. What would be the consequence for his career? Missing out on another CL campaign. Battling relegation or mid-table obscurity - at best. Surely he must be thinking: ‘I could’ve been on that pitch?’ on the 1st of June...

You're missing the fact that Villa would double his price if they get promoted.

I'm almost 100% certain he stays. 2 Southampton players in the Nations League squad today, playing for Villa in the PL would get him a fair crack at the England squad.

I don't think he'd risk souring his relationship with the club he loves. He'd probably sign a big contract extension with CL team and relegation clauses.

Doesn't he have a release clause?

I think you're correct. I can't remember where but I thought that I read that there were 2 different release clauses, 1 if promoted and another for non promotion. Obviously the promotion was a higher fee...

Completely agree. He needed that about 3 years ago since then he has buckled down and been pretty decent and minimal fuss. What he needs is to play in the Prem regularly either for Villa or someone else and prove his worth. Clearly a classy player and in my opinion he will only improve playing with decent players around him

something like £60 million, which we obviously won't be paying. He'll probably end up at Man City to improve their home grown quota!

Nah, he said himself that he really wanted it, wanted to play CL, and believed that he would have made the English squad if it had have happened. He pretty much said that the only reason it didn't happen is because the new owners came in and they flat out refused to sell him for anything other than an exorbitant price.

Sounds like they strong armed him into staying, in which case I'm a bit surprised he signed another contract.

He wouldn't go to Man City. He strikes me as a guy who wants to play, loves football, and is not motivated by a big contract (vs. playing time). I doubt he would go if Villa get promoted but would be surprised if he didn't move on if they don't.

Apparently he was gutted about it at the time (when we didn't sign him) but he's a diehard Villa fan so signing a new contract and getting a big pay rise in exchange for another year playing as the captain of his boyhood club probably wasn't too hard a sell. Surely they have guaranteed he can leave if Villa don't get promoted.

Depends on the terms of any release clause. If it's 60m (as rumoured) they've made it extremely difficult for him to leave.

If Villa come up Grealish isn't coming to Spurs... In fact they have financial muscle now with their new owners and will probably send big.

Are you sure about that? I heard something on TS the other day saying they may have to sell due to the PL FFP rules?

Probably sell if they don’t get promoted, but promotion is going to mean a whole lot of cash for them so I can’t see how they’d fall foul of FFP after that.

I just done a quick search, looks like they could be in breach of football league FFP, it won't affect them this season, but if they get relegated next year they could get a 9 point deduction.
