Clubs know that the man on the street thinks that player sales are like ebay or an auction room. Whereas, the reality of such sales is that the price will normally be negotiated and agreed, and a formal bid is merely setting out the final agreed price. However, assuming there's no release clauses, if the negotiation doesn't go as wished, then an offer might be layed to test the resolve of the other party (i.e. are they all pants and no trousers?). The fact they are saying there was no official bid does not mean there was no offer or no negotiation.

Bruce contradicts himself a lot. He says Spurs are a big team and that Jack is disappointed it didn't go through etc and then says we never actually made a bid. It was a bizarre transfer saga
He is being disigenuous
If the boy signs a new contract without a buyout clause ensuring that he can leave even if they don't get promoted then his agent has done a shitty job.

Grealish clearly was prepared to leave his boyhood club for his own development and progression needs and if he signs a deal with no clause inserted he will never get to test himself on the European and potentiall International stage.

Villa have money and will probably go up, but if they think they can shoot up the league when there's so many teams ahead of them they'll be sorely mistaken. If Grealish stays at Villa he probably won't challenge to reach his ability levels until he's about 27 at the earliest. A big waste for a club that wouldn't give a shit about you if you weren't good enough to make it there initially.

Let's see how he does in the Championship this time around but a new deal with no clause would walk the tightrope of career suicide for such promise and potential. It's a far too risky thing to do when the new owners have already shown their hand by going back on what seems to have been said to him
Trix has said that his agent is extremely good and so I don't think he'll end up signing a contract that doesn't suit him.

Came on as sub tonight and played a part in the goal. This can only mean two things.

1. Cup Tied
2. I’m back to being the only one on SC who has to sit through Villa games.

Thought I heard Spurs will not go back for him. Sad for Grealish.

I'm pretty sure that if he continues to do well and only has a year left on his contract next summer we wouldn't let a failed bid this time around sway us against going in for him again, especially when we target such a niche market at present

Shame, I feel like we really missed an opportunity there.

Meh he is ok but nothing special in my view - I was totally not that excited about signing him and the fact we missed out is fine by me. He is a decent player who could become a good player but not good enough for us.

He was potential and suited the philosophy of the club, which is not to go out and sign ready made superstars. He could have been a potential replacement for Eriksen if he decides not to renew his contract.

“It’s fair to say we were in such a bad position financially that if Tottenham had have done their work early, then I’m sure he would have been a Tottenham player,” the Villa boss said on Friday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
