Dele Alli was different. I had seen him toy United players in the cup, and his profile of scoring important goals and swagger was there for all to see.

Villa are set to receive a £3.6M sell-on free from Adama Traoré's imminent move from Boro to Wolves, so that's even less of a need for them to give Grealish to Levy on the cheap now.

It should lead to a clearer answer as to what is going on. Particularly from Bruce’s comments pre or post game. Either manager could have demanded that he was kept but depends if that is a realistic option

My gut feeling is the discussion was based around how confident Bruce was dealing with a squad shorn of its best player, amongst other things. Another manager, like Henry, would at least want the best players staying as they acclimatised to the club, especially with finances being tight. Bruce knows what he’s got and what he hasn’t got- he’s a boring but safe pair of hands for a transitional season and he’ll accept losing his best player because he doesn’t really have a choice
