I'm not sure about that. So you think that without a pre-season with us it will take them a whole season to find their feet?

Pre-season is more about getting fitness levels back up after the break. I'm sure he will do that anyway even if it's with Villa for a bit. Absolutely it's ideal to get in early and get on the same page as your team mates. But it wont make a great difference, certainly not to the extent it will affect our final finish in the season. Besides I think he'll be more important to us as the season picks up and the cup games come up. By which time he'll have been with us for over a month anyway.

The whole 'pre-season' thing is very strange. I can't see how it makes that much difference. A few kick about games and a training blitz but if a player misses out it seems to be a valid excuse for poor performances for months afterwards. We do however have a few players who really seemed to kick on in their second season.

Yeah and every player is different. Some settle in straight away and others need time. I think Jack being English and with some experience in this league should be ok early on. I'm sure pre-season is just to test fitness levels and work on getting sharp again. Some players do great in pre-season and then play poorly when the competition increases with competive games. Others have a poor or mediocre pre-season and yet start the season great. I mean Kane can't even be bothered to score until September :cautious:

I can appreciate people get anxious and want that first signing done already though. I guess I'm just a lot more relaxed about it all. I think that's the benefit of having a settled squad. Unlike in the past where we've had to clear out the squad and brings several players in. It disrupted us in the past but I don't see that under Poch these past few years. I'm conifdent that our first team that finished the season (maybe with Winks instead of Dembele) will get us off to a great start. The newcomers will keep them on their toes and add both competition and cover as things heat up and the fixtures build up.

Pre-season training for Pochettino is important. From Poch’s own lips in December 2017:

“This summer was a very good example because we signed good players but it was so late and with no pre-season [for them], you pay,”

“You then need six or seven months for the player to be fit, adapt himself in everything and that is always against us.”

“The most important thing that we have been talking about is to identify our targets and, on 3 July, when we start our pre-season, they are here. If we don’t, it’s so difficult for them to help the team“

A number of our current players have talked about how hard our preseason's are compared to other clubs but that work makes the difference during the season. It seems that Poch demands a different level of fitness and has a preseason plan to get the players where they need to be. This is especially important for the players that have never understood what those expectation are.

Don't know if Birmingham Mail are run by the same people as the Daily Mail - but at the same time as that tweet they published this article (from a different journo)- sounds like a leak imo (maybe from Grealish's camp):

The latest on Jack Grealish and Tottenham as Aston Villa star flies to Portugal

The AVFC ace is a wanted man after his stunning displays last season

Jack Grealish is expected to join Tottenham Hotspur as soon as a suitable transfer fee is agreed.

Spurs want to sign the 22-year-old this summer and are ready to negotiate with crisis-club, Villa.

Grealish is currently in Portugal on a pre-season training camp with the claret and blues, but is well aware of Mauricio Pochettino’s interest.

The north London outfit are the clear favourites to sign him this summer and are now the only seriously-interested club, BirminghamLive understands.

But Villa are still waiting for a formal offer as Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy continues to sit back in the hope of landing Grealish on the cheap.

Villa value their star man at £30million - but Spurs are ready to pitch in at around half that price.

Clearly, something will have to give and a solution must be found before the August 9 transfer deadline.

Grealish has continued to stay in shape this summer ahead of a crunch season for his own personal development.

He finished the last campaign as the best-performing player in the Championship which alerted Pochettino to his qualities.

The Spurs boss regularly sent representatives to watch Josh Onomah - who was on loan at Villa - but it was the rave reviews for Grealish that really caught his attention.

The ex-England U21 ace has remained out of the spotlight since the play-off final heartache on May 26 - and may well have played his last game in Villa colours.

Tottenham lead the race to sign Jack Grealish as Aston Villa hold out for £30m for England U21 midfielder
  • Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish set to leave the club this summer
  • Tottenham are in pole position to sign him but clubs are some way apart on fee
  • Spurs know that Villa need to raise £40m to ease cash-flow problems
Tottenham have emerged as clear frontrunners to sign Jack Grealish.

Mauricio Pochettino would like to add the 22-year-old to his squad having tracked his progress last season.

Negotiations over a fee are expected as the transfer window activity begins to pick up pace, but Aston Villa want £30million for the England Under 21 international.

Spurs would though look to try to take advantage of Villa's need to make £40m in savings due to the cash-flow issues of owner Tony Xia.

An initial offer in the region of £15m has been mentioned but Villa are determined to push the price above £20m. Matters are complicated by the dismissals of chief executive Keith Wyness and director of football Steve Round, leaving manager Steve Bruce to take on extra responsibility over transfers.

Spurs are prepared to wait to extract best value, with the window not closing until August 9, but Pochettino has made his intentions clear to the club. Grealish would be open to the switch, it is understood.

The midfielder enjoyed his best campaign to date last season, after coming back from a freak kidney injury that kept him sidelined until November.

Grealish was hugely influential in Bruce's side on the way to the Championship play-off final and Spurs were alert due to Josh Onomah's loan spell. Other clubs including Fulham are interested in Grealish but White Hart Lane is now his most likely destination by a distance.

Grealish is currently in Portugal on a pre-season training camp and Villa accept he must be sold to balance the books.

Tottenham close in on Jack Grealish transfer as Mauricio Pochettino eyes competition for Dele Alli

The attacking midfielder, 22, is having to be patient as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy bides his time to exploit Villa's cash woes

Tottenham have won the race for Jack Grealish who is waiting for Spurs to firm up their interest with an irresistible bid.

Aston Villa starlet Grealish is at the club's training camp in Portugal but is expecting to return to Premier League with Spurs.

The attacking midfielder,22, is having to be patient as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy bides his time to exploit Villa's cash woes.

But Villa boss Steve Bruce is resigned to losing Grealish to raise funds as embattled Chinese owner Dr Tony Xia clings to control.

The Londoners will offer Grealish a bumper five-year deal which will see his £20,000-a-week salary rocket.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants Grealish to compete with England ace Dele Alli.

Grealish has come to terms with the necessity of leaving his boyhood club since missing out on promotion in the Championship play-off final.

Leicester were keen but have since landed James Maddison for £25million while fellow suitors West Ham are snapping up Jack Wilshere.

It has left Tottenham in prime position to get their man after Liverpool declined to bid.

Grealish has watched England's World Cup success with interest knowing he could be in the same team as Spurs' Harry Kane next season.

Close pal and mentor John Terry has helped fuel Grealish's ambitions by stressing his top-flight quality and England national team potential.

Why are they asking more for Grealish when Maddison who had a better season went for 22m?...

Why shouldn't they? He's their player than can ask what they like.

I have said it before There is no benchmark for what a player is worth only what a team will sell him for, and what a team will pay for him.

I swear that article is almost word for word with something I read weeks ago. Are they even trying to disguise it at all?

‘Close pal and mentor John Terry....’ Jesus, I fucking hope not

Tabloid hyperbole.

Terry allegedly, to use the cliche, "took Grealish under his wing" as a senior pro joining Villa at the start of the season. Presumably he said don't be a complete uknowwot like I was when I was your age, and learn how to behave with dignity, always parking your Bentley in disabled spots and shagging your teammates' birds. And you'll be a man, my son.

Maybe he also reminded young Jack of how close his career came to ending at Grealish's age:

-----------------------------------------------

Chelsea footballers John Terry and Jody Morris and Wimbledon's Des Byrne have today walked free from Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court after being found not guilty of affray.

Both Terry and Morris were cleared of all charges following a brawl at The Wellington Club, a members-only London nightclub, on January 4.

However, Bryne, 21, was found guilty on one count, but escaped a custodial sentence. The judge accepted a majority verdict of 10-2 on the charge of "possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon". The player, who earns £75,000 a year, has been given a £2000 fine and must pay £1000 costs. He has 28 days to pay.

Terry, 21, reportedly left the dock in tears as he was found not guilty of glassing bouncer Trevor Thirlwall in the face. He was cleared on charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawful wounding, possessing a bottle as an offensive weapon and affray.

Despite being manhandled in the press scrum outside the court, Terry's lawyer, Desmond de Silva, managed to say that the player was "extremely relieved and pleased" to have been cleared of the "monstrous and outrageous allegations".

Terry refused to comment himself but did smile for the cameras.

Jody Morris, 23, was also found not guilty of affray.

(snip)

Thirlwall suffered severe bruising and swelling to one eye, his cheek and nose in the incident. He also needed stitches.

Terry's lawyers said Thirlwall had thrown the first punch and Terry had punched him in self-defence. Terry's lawyers denied he was holding a bottle.

The maximum penalty for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, as Terry had been charged, is life imprisonment. An alternative charge of unlawful wounding carries five years in jail.

Byrne and Terry faced four years for possession of an offensive weapon if found guilty and the maximum jail term for affray is three years.
