Yes for £30 mil. He is a good player but will have a limited shelf life. I’d also be happy getting an older 30 years + experienced fox in the box to mentor our younger strikers.
Can you hand on heart say that Ivan Toney is the right character to be mentoring mid to late teenagers?

The desperation really is blindsiding people here. I would be slightly more forgiving if he was the right striker stylistically but he couldn't be further from an Ange striker if you tried.

Not sure Rooney, Ronaldo, Giggs, Keane and Ferdinand are the best examples.

They might have had character flaws but were extremely professional and dedicated to the playing side.

Not sure Toney comes across as being in the same bracket.

Keane virtually ended Haaland's career. He was undeniably dedicated, but intentionally injuring someone to exact revenge and risking a considerable ban is arguably highly unprofessional on-field behaviour. Ferdinand famously missed a drug test, resulting in an eight-month ban.

I don't know much about Toney's dedication. We know he was banned for eight months for betting and wants to move to a bigger club. However, I haven't seen anything questioning his professionalism in terms of being lazy or not giving his all for Brentford on the field. I might be wrong about that, though, as I'm not very familiar with him.

I’m not saying Keane wasn’t a nasty individual. My point is about his dedication to winning football games.

I’ve not seen that element to Toney so I’m not convinced their character flaws are comparable:

Yeah, fair enough. I think Keane was an out-and-out winner, which is why Ferguson was prepared to put up with the other stuff because it came as part of the package.

It could be Toney's talent and professionalism doesn't outweigh all his character "flaws", although I'm still a bit confused about what all his flaws are. The betting ban, and the wanting to leave Brentford, I suppose. Are there any others we know of?

Again, I would say this is a decision that Ange and his team need to make based on their knowledge of Toney and their discussions with him. I don't think any of us are close enough to make a fully informed call about it one way or the other.

But there are two perspectives here. There's the perspective of Toney being disruptive, and unprofessional. But there's also the perspective of Toney working his way up from the lower tiers of the football league to earn his big break in the Premier League and the national team. This journey could demonstrate the value of hard work and patience for young players. He can say to the kids, look, when I was 24, I was playing for Peterborough. Don't give up, keep working hard and you can make it. He may have even gained some valuable insight from his ban, it depends whether he has learned from the experience.

For the record, I'm not desperate to sign him at all. I'm just surprised people are so certain about the character flaws of a person they have never even met, let alone talk to or know. Southgate called him up to the national team, and as far as we know he didn't cause any issues during the month long stay in Germany.

Media reporting that Brentford have slashed their asking price. Isn’t this the 2nd year in a row that Brentford have managed the departure of one of their star players badly? Last year they made a bit of a mess re Raya and ended up having to accept the loan with obligation to buy from Arsenal at a lower price than they wanted, now they’ve seemingly misread the market for Ivan Toney.

I’m still not a fan of the fella but as his price falls he’s bound to become more appealing.

I still have a sneaky suspicion that if we dont get Eze and Neto then it will be potentially one of them and we will look at Toney.

I think Toney scores 20+ goals a season in any of the top ten PL teams.

Not many strikers you could say that about.

We'd need much better luck with penalties next season for Toney to hit 20+ with us. Think we had about 2 all season.

Don't want him anywhere near the club personally. I also am not convinced he is anything more than a decent striker who has had a bit of a purple patch

Gambling Sponsor on the training kit, Crypto firm on the shirts... making him feel right at home.

Lets make the image of the club a bit worse

A thousand times this. Where's this love for Toney come from all of a sudden?

Have we forgotten our "No dickhead" policy when it comes to signing players? And that's not amongst the fans, it's the players.

The guys the bellend and I don't want him near our club.

I think most of us feel that way, but you know that there will be a price point at which a club like ours will consider him. I am curious as to how much the personality concerns have already played a part in his cold market. I also wonder what his threshold is for staying put (e.g. if the only offer on the table is from West Ham, would he still be so keen to leave Brentford).

This is it for me too.
I've never met the bloke so can't for sure say whether he's a dick or not but I just don't think he's a particularly good player.
He's not bad but his age and skillset don't really seem to suit our direction.

Think if Richy goes and we can't get in a big replacement then we will be taking a serious look at Toney come August.

This has deadline day written all over it for us or someone, Brentford want to sell and have effectively signed his replacement already.

Why even sell Richarlison though? We could do with both. The way things are currently looking if we do sign Ramsey we will be looking packed centrally. I can't see us getting Eze or Doue after that but we could still get Neto. So why not instead of a 10 we get Toney up top to compete with Richarlison. Then Son is our left attacker and Kulusevski central. We would look well balanced throughout attack for me. I have my doubts about Toney but more so if he's our only true centre forward. Keep Richarlison as well though and I'd be a lot more comfortable. It's already clear in pre season when Richarlison is out we lack a centre forward. The same then happens if Toney is out.

Do we actually know he’s a “dickhead” though? Many Spurs fans thought Maddison was a bit of a “dickhead” before we signed him.

And look at the early pages of the Richarlison thread before we bought him, lots of fans seemed to think he was a dickhead too.

Or head over to the Bentancur/Romero/Lo Celso thread for a round up of some of the dickish behaviour they have been involved in or potentially involved in this summer.

Maybe Toney is a bit of dickhead, but he wouldn’t be the first or last dickhead we’ll sign. This is professional football, it comes with the territory.

He's not really a dickhead, he's arrogant but then so are a lot of top players too. I think people see him that way for how he didn't seem to own his suspension and then the way he spoke about leaving (although I think that was no worse than Kane talking with Neville). The most important thing will be for Ange to speak with him and make his decision.
