A massive 4 in 17.
Scintillating form, I think we can all agree. I don’t think he’s any better than Richarlison, who has a more consistent scoring record in the premier league. I see Toney as a bit of a flash in the pan, a journeyman championship level player that had a purple patch over 18 months.

Is he a handful? Of course he is, but so was Ashley Barnes.

His stats may not be great since his return but he’s playing for Brentford ffs. There is no way we are going to buy the likes of Isak, Vlahovic or OsImhen I’m fine with us signing Eze and Toney . I would also love us to sign Pedro Neto but I doubt we’ll see that happen when we spent 50m on Johnson less than a year ago. More likely Jonathan David as an alternative to Toney and Marcus Edwards to compete at RW.

He scored 20 in the league the season before. It’s not unusual for number 9’s to get a good goal return when playing for a lower team.

Defoe’s goal scoring record for Sunderland was better than for us when they were getting relegated.

Toney is in his prime and almost certainly looking to be a first team starter.

The biggest question is whether the club see him as the man to lead the line for us.

My opinion is that he isn’t but naturally would support him if the club push ahead with the move.

I guess ffp and how much Brentford would want is part of it. That and the risk of his betting ban not so long ago. I think there is that element of wait a while longer to see if he's really over it. If he was world class he would have more suitors though regardless. He's just very good and at times great but not necessarily worth the risk.

Yeah you could be right. However, I still believe he could be a good option in the range of 30 to 40 million pounds, to rotate and provide cover for Richarlison, allowing us to concentrate on other priorities this window. Then, next summer, we could consider moving him or Richarlison on and investing heavily in a significant upgrade at centre forward. Even if he chipped in with ten goals this season, it could make a difference. But it would hinge on his transfer fee, salary, and character.

I've been very critical of Toney because of very good information I have received on him, but as far as the dressing room and around the other players/coaches are concerned I've heard nothing negative at all. It's not there that he is a problem or more so a ticking time bomb waiting to go off.
He had the hump with Southgate didn't he.

So like you say, if Ange leaves him out for balance or because others are in better form etc, how long before he's vocal about it?

It is all quite subjective in terms of whether Toney is a good or poor player & would suit our style of play?

My question would be: does he pass Ange's character test?

Regarding the England thing. Unless I'm missing something Southgate made a joke about Toney being "disgusted" at coming on with just a minute to go. Several news headlines have made it look like Toney said he was disgusted.

Toney ackowledged he finds it frustrating but has worked on his emotions to ensure he remains focused.

While I might have queries on his character, unless I'm missing something, this really is nothing,.

That's a really weak defence for his lack of goals. Maupay was more prolific for Brentford than Toney last season. He's a year younger and would cost a fraction of Brentford's asking price for Toney.

I'm not going to look up all the CFs at inferior PL teams who had better scoring rates than Toney last season, but it would include younger and cheaper options that none of us would want near our starting XI.

Obviously the media likes to sensationalise in general, but Toney has made an easy target of himself with his past actions / comments.

I didn't see any signs of negativity from him on Sunday. He looked focused and raring to go, which is what any team wants from it's subs.

I wouldn't call this sensationalising, I think it's clear distortion of the truth.

Someone's past actions cannot justify this. Not saying that's what you were doing btw.

Agree with your 2nd paragraph.

I wasn't suggesting that his past actions justify the media doing this. What I meant is his past actions create the risk of readers lapping up whatever lies/distortions/exaggerations the media chooses to discredit him with, without questioning it or giving him the same benefit of doubt that they would afford to someone who is more liked and/or has a cleaner track record.
I.e. he's an easy target for the media to unfairly exploit.

Would people in here accept selling Richy and getting Toney for about the same overall price (fee/wages etc)?

So effectively a Richy/Toney straight swap within our squad?

Richy seems a better character and less risk off the pitch, but Toney prob the better striker but bigger gamble (yeah pun intended).

Depends what we value more, I guess.
Not for me.
I don't think there's that much between them ability wise, although I personally rate Richy higher, so it comes down to age, personality and such stuff.

I'd much rather keep Richy and blood the youth than sign Toney, I certainly wouldn't swap them.

That's not what I've said at all. Almost the opposite in fact.
Presumably, Ange isn't fickle enough to form his opinion of a player's character off the back of reading a sensationalist article. ;)

Even if he thought there was any truth to it, there's nothing to stop him giving Southgate a call after the Euros to ask what really happened.
