Is Hugo Lloris as important for us as Bale was on his final season with the club?

Seems to me Lloris is the main reason we're still in the picture for a top four push at this time of the season, its unbelievable how he just keeps bailing us out game after game with some spectacular saves and its just a pleasure to watch (even if I would prefer him not being forced to be so amazing every single game). Its not that different from what Bale meant for us on his coming of age season, even though Bale only took that Messiah role half way through the season, whereas Hugo has been doing it all season long.

Im starting this thread because I just don't see how a big club, *cough* Real Madrid *cough*, won't be all over him at the end of the season (specially if we don't make it to the CL, which sadly seems like the most likely outcome this season). And if it took 85m for us to let go of Gareth, Im wondering what price tag should we place over Hugo (yes, I know goal keepers never are sold for the same price as attacking players, but we still shouldn't accept anything less than 25m IMO... in fact, we shouldn't sell him at all, but money talks louder than fans).

No, he wasn't, but he's been by far our best player since.

£40million minimum for Lloris or they can fuck off.

No I dont think he will be as the season wears on. I can see more of a team ethos developing under Poch and the reliance on one single player will wear off as we gain more confidence and acclimitise to Poch's methods. Still I have to agree he has been outstanding in the last 4-5 games but then at times the whole defense has done well and Fazio, Verts and Davies have all had steady games. It always makes a keeper more confident when he has a solid back four in front of him.

He probably saves us as many or more points as Bale won us.

Different way of looking at things as obviously the goalscorer gets the glory, but in regards to results ; he wins us games by not conceding when the opposition has every right to score. Just like Bale was scoring when we had no right to win in some games.

An interesting question and one I was thinking myself recently.
Probably yes, but like with Bale I am fahooking happy about it - we don;t have to apologise for having good players.

I know my opinions go against quite a few members of the forum on this, but I believe we have a much better squad than some would allow - I equate it with the squad that Harry Redknapp inherited, where Luka Modric was still considered by many as too lightweight and Gareth Bale was a Jonah who should be sold to Nottingham Forest. And yet, when comparing (usually the squad that beat the Milans against our current one) and complaining about the quality of this one (Levy's sold our World Class players, this squad doesn't have any World Class players, etc) no-one seems to want to equate Lloris with Bale. I can't help but feel that, apart from that it suits an agenda, it is also because of the opposite positions played.

I also find it interesting that despite our position a couple of places off fourth and improving form, you are not at all hopeful of a fourth place finishes. At the same time everyone to do with Liverpool and folk in the media are not in the least bit writing them off - strangely, however, that even if we do lose tomorrow and they do win they will only, then, be level on points with us. Anyway, I still think we have a reasonable chance at top four. I set out my reasons for doing so in response to another poster who wrote our chances off, in the United match thread. I won't type it out, but you will find it here if you wish to read it:

No

And anyone quoting £80m is setting themselves up for a big slice of disappointment pie IMO. Goalkeepers don't go for that sort of money. Never have and possibly never will. If we get 20m to 30m we'll have done very well.

I think it's fair to say he's been about as important as Bale was and will surpass him if he keeps this form up all season. I love the guy and I hope when he leaves we give him a proper send off, because he's just the definition of class.

In no particular order, Neuer, Courtois and Lloris are the top 3 keepers in the world. The other two aren't going anywhere for the rest of their careers IMO so if anyone wants Hugo they are going to have to accept that you pay a premium for special players in that type of circumstances. Would be extremely disappointed if he doesn't at least break Buffon's record!

Which is why we should not sell Lloris. Without Lloris, we are damn close to the drop zone right now, if not in it.

Lloris is worth at least 60m to us due to this. Then given that he is only 28 and just starting to enter the years of his prime, another 20m gets added on top of that. Therefore, 80m or GTFO. Simple math.

We are talking about someone who is arguably the best keeper in the Prem.

You can repeat yourself all you like, 80m ain't happening. All you're going to achieve by constantly saying it is to suck the will to live out via my eye sockets :D

For me all that Lloris has done is his job.

If he hadn't saved those goal attempts most people would have been on the "should have done better" bandwagon.

Seeing that we are now exactly half way through the season, meaning that every te)am has played essentially the exactely difficulty of opposition ( give or take some randomness of home or away), and we sit 2 points off 4th, I don't see how anyone can say it's incredibly unlikely we finish 4th. Improbable, perhaps, but not with a crushing improbability.

Couple to our standing the fact that we are clearly improving (it may not seem like it from inside, i.e. if your world view is formed by listening to/reading the opinions of other pessimistic Spurs supporters), but we are considered at the moment to be one of the form teams of the Prem, after all we have only lost one of the last 8 league games. If we do just slightly better (that is, just 4 or so more points than in the first half) in the 2nd half of the season, and all other things being essentially equal, we have a very good chance for top 4.

(if you look at the bookies, Arse are 4/11 to finish to 4, and we are 6/1, which seems quite incredible seeing as they are only 2 points ahead of us, until you realise that it represents more the relative mentalities of the respective fans placing the bets than some statistical reality. Pool who are horrible are also 6/1, whereas Soton are 9/2, which sounds reasonable, and every one else is "no chance" including Spam, who are in the same position as us points wise)

I think Lloris is great but seriously if we were offered £35 million tomorrow that's a great deal for a goal keeper I think Vorm could come in and save most of what Lloris does and would probably be better at kicking... I don`t think Lloris has been the best keeper in the league this season and he wasn`t last season either...
I am sorry Bale was on another level he lifted the team, the supporters and even fans of other clubs... Any team in the world would have wanted Bale that is not the case with Lloris... I just love it when fans of Man Utd, Arsenal and even Chelsea recognize how great Bale and Modric are, obviously I wish they still played for us but I feel some pride because of it..

I'd give them Lloris and 50 - 60 mil for Bale.
I'd also swap Lloris for Modric.
As good as Lloris is, there a lot of good keepers out there at the moment.

And Happy New Year
