New head coach hailed as ‘student of English game’

Peter Jenson in Seville

When Juande Ramos addresses his new players on Wednesday evening before Tottenham Hotspur take to the field against Blackpool in the Carling Cup fourth round, it will not be the first time the names of Lennon, Berbatov, Keane and Chimbonda have been included in his team talk. Andrés Palop, the Seville goalkeeper, has revealed that they formed a key part of Ramos’s dressing-room address before last season’s Uefa Cup victory over Tottenham.
Palop said: “When we had to play Tottenham in the Uefa Cup, Juande spoke very highly about Lennon to us before the game and we talked about Robbie Keane about Berbatov and about Chimbonda – players he knew had the quality to cause us problems.”
The goalkeeper painted a picture of a manager meticulous in his knowledge of the opposition, who passes that information to players in one-to-one team talks before matches. “He talks with each individual player about what they need to be doing on the pitch,” Palop said. “He tries to let each player know exactly what they are going to come up against.”
Palop also describes Ramos as a fanatical student of the game with an in-depth knowledge of the Premier League. “He is going to know the English league perfectly well because he has seen so many games already,” he said. “He likes the idiosyncrasies of the English game, he likes the way they play the game in England and how the people follow the game there.
“We would always talk about the English matches that were going to be on the television and how he was going to be at home to watch them.”
Despite being thorough, Palop said that Ramos’s talks are based far more on what he expects his players to do to the opposition rather than vice versa. “He knows that if we play the way he wants us to, then the opposition are going to end up a lot more worried about us than we are of them, so he doesn’t dwell on their strengths,” he said.
“He normally tells us the four main ‘virtues’ that the other side has and we try to make sure that they don’t do us any harm with any of these characteristics, but the emphasis is on us to stamp our identity on the game.
“He is a coach who never looks to be the protagonist. He prefers to concentrate on studying and analysing the game. He reads matches very well and his players respect him because if he has something to say he will say it to their faces and not in the media or behind their backs.
“For a player, he is everything you want in your manager. Have patience, give him some support and I’m sure Tottenham will very soon be fighting for major honours.”

Sounds promising. Lets hope he can do the business,...

Great news. If Ramos wants any of his former players I bet they'd be here as soon as they can if we could agree a fee. Everything i've heard from players he's coached has been nothing but high praise.

Apparently he went into the dressing room after the game today said, "We start work tomorrow." and left. I like it.

Hi guys, I'll give you my view on Juande Ramos. I am from Spain but live in London, yet I watch regularly the Spanish league, including Sevilla who have been a top side for a couple of years.
Juande Ramos has many similarities in his approach to football to Benitez:
very meticulous and tactical,
high tempo style,
high defensive line,
quick passing trying to get to the box with the fewer number of passes
Both fond of rotations
both very high on fitness.
Benitez is a better defensive coach with his back four fantastically well organised. That doesn;t mean that Sevilla weren't well organised in defense.
On the other hand Juande plays more attacking and fluent football, generally using 2 wingers and 2 strikers who actually get into the opposition box :d.

One thing I am certain of: Spurs will improve their fitness levels, and the level of agression of the team. Juande is a demanding coach that wants his players to deliver 100%. If they don;t they'll be benched no matter who they are.

I wouldn't be surprised if Juande went for a central midfield playmaker as one of his first signings. You are sorely missing Carrick. At Sevilla he had Paulsen, but with Spurs finances I think he could go for a better player.
Juande is along with Benitez and Valverde (Espanyol coah) the best Spanish coach, and tactically la liga is one of the strongest leagues around.

Thanks Juande

You think he may go back for Poulsen, or any other players from Sevilla?

The only Sevilla player I have seen linked to Spurs is Kanoute, but that is from a Seville rag that has no much credibility.
If I hear something I'll let you know.

Benitez took Liverpool from third under Houllier to fifth, to third, to third again (just), and will do well to manage another third place. They have as much chance of winning the title as we do. Please don't point out the CL and FA Cup wins, because I shall just fall about laughing.

Liverpool's back four has been very well organised for over 40 years.

They certainly defend better than under Houllier. BTW you forgot about Souness and Evans reigns  Anything but defensively organised they were by then.
I don't think they will win the league either. They have far too many average players, but neither I though that with the team he inherited from Houllier plus the average players Benitez brought in (with a few exceptions) he would have managed to get the team into 2 CH L finals in three years whether it makes you laugh or not , beating in the process some of the best teams in Europe. Nor did I think that his Valencia side would beat Real Madrid to two la liga titles (Barcelona were crap by then).

Comes to something when your given a lesson by a new boy eh SS ?

Got to say the spanish visitors are a refreshing change from the egyptian nobheads we had when Mido was here.

Thanks for the Ramos summary JR.

Really? Under Evans, Liverpool hovered between third and fourth. And let's leave that tosser Souness out of it.

Perhaps you, and our newcomer, had better check the facts. Something you, at least, seldom take the trouble to.

And maybe look at the reality. Houllier was brought in with the expectation that he'd make Liverpool realistic title challengers again. He failed. So has Benitez—now on the fourth year of his five-year plan, with Liverpool looking as realistic title challengers as we do.

I don't think he's that much of a **** to be snapping up sevilla players the moment he leaves the club.

Last Spurs manager to sign a former player of his was Glenda's signing of Dean Richards, and we know how that turned out

Nice to think that maybe we'll have a man in charge who really will take no bullshit from the players .

Theres been a vibe of ego placating and favouritism in our team selection of late .

Hopefully a strong man will put this in the past . He sounds just perfect....but then talk is cheap .

And yes , I think our board will only be enhanced by an influx of Spanish fans .

But Evans & Houlier didn't have to contend with the likes of Abramovich's chelsea and the billionaire ownership of other teams (and the general allround improvement in quality) or even a resurgent spurs did they. Their premiership was a slightly tamer affair than the one Benitez is playing in, don't you think ?

Do you not think Benitez is a good coach then or were you just splitting hairs because you're still miffed about Jol ?

Fall about laughing? At 2 major trophies and a losing CL final? Hardly mean feats are they SS57?!

Liverpool are still only 6 points off the top, so hardly out of it yet. We are 19 points away and never were in it.
