Made famous by one certain Johann Cruyff. Think I read somewhere at the time it’s why Modric chose it for us.

Aside from potentially liking the number because of who has worn it in the past or some personal affiliation he may have, he did really have much choice. Only 2, 14, 15, 25, 26, 28, 31, 32, 34 & 39 were available.

14 was freed up by Perisic leaving.

It wouldn't be at all unheard of for his number to change before the season starts, once other numbers have been freed up by player departures. Out of those that could realistically become available, the obvious numbers that a CM/RB might choose are #4 (Skipp) & #5 (Hojbjerg).

Other desirable numbers that realistically will become available include #3 (Reguilon) & #11 (Gil). You'd think both of those will be taken up before the season starts, either by new signings or existing players asking to switch from something in the 20s/30s.

Now that Lloris has left, perhaps Vicario will switch to #1.
