Are they both keepers as well?

6ft at that age is massive, my just turned 13 year old lad is only 5'10 (I say only), he can't play in goal though, can't catch the ball :)

Tbh, it was a difficult choice back when he was 9, Chelsea, QPR, Reading, Southampton and Fulham wanted to sign him, I chose Reading in the end as there seemed to be a good pathway through to pro level and I really liked the coaches styles back then (his original coach is now GK coach at Villa), lucky or him its worked out and he's now a first year pro, very different challenge now as its all about getting minutes, loans or chances (with a little bit of growth still to do).

So whilst I've never been on the side of being let go, I've certainly had the bullshit excuses, or seen people let go for things that just don't make sense at all - honestly, it is a frustrating industry, I'm sure Trix has a better understanding of it all, but ability alone just isn't enough, you need to know the right people, be in the right place at the right time, be liked, have the right engagement (not too much) and all sorts of stuff on the side along with the ability and body to perform. Goalkeeping physicality is very different to an outfielders one...

Both keepers yeah. Proper madhouse! Definitely choices to make going forward about Cat 1 v Cat 2 / 3 etc. Just going to let them develop for the moment and see what happens
sorry mate, we pour hearts into our lads and this is so hard to take!! Doesnt mean they are right though!!

Cheers mate it's all good. Actually teaches them some good stuff about resilience etc. Even though it's quite brutal for the age. At least I can go back to hating Chelsea now!

Since leaving my eldest has had invites to train from Arsenal, West Ham, Palace, Fulham and QPR... Notice which london club is conspicuously missing FFS!

Palace have a good and growing set up, mate of mine head of coaches there.

cat 1 obviously have the best coaching available obviously, and like you said, resilience is needed especially for goalkeeping, jeez I’ve seen some horrible mistakes from my lad over the years with everyone having a moan or a comment, tough being a keeper parent too!

Worth getting in touch with these if location works, these are the type of goalkeeping coaching that are run locally.

As @Trix says, specialist training is key for any kid who aspires to be a goalkeeper (nutters), it is really easy to spot those that have been trained compared to those that haven't in grassroots.

My friend set up this goalkeeping setup in our area, and I do recommend him, he has had a few go from there into academy and even just today a 19 yr old keeper just signed his first pro contract with QPR, I recommend his as he is brilliant with the kids too https://bowmangoalkeeping.co.uk/

Obviously this coaching comes at a price, unlike academy football where it doesn't, but its a really good thing to help develop those basic fundamentals needed.
He is going to a session this evening!!!

Smart move. It's been quite weird to be honest. They pitched me this whole long term plan for both of them and I turned down quite a few other opportunities to go there - the drive to Cobham is absolutely savage for me so it hasn't been easy.

And then they've ditched both of them which obviously is their right to do but the reasoning is just odd. My older one didn't have a great term tbf what with starting secondary it was all a bit much for him and it affected his form, but still, he's the same potential they loved a few months ago. Just turned 12 and 6 foot!

My younger one baffles me completely, they're saying he's not good enough with his feet but he's fucking 8 and shit hot at everything else (in my v biased opinion) - maybe coach him?! What keeper isn't a project with potential at this age?

Apologies been waiting to rant to someone about this lol
My lad is u10s and has the ‘feet issue’ as well, he’s just very cumbersome which in this era of keepers isn’t ideal. He can ping it all over the park, he’s even scored from a drop kick this season. It’s almost like the brain works quicker than the feet.
Honestly no dad bias here but what a keeper though for his age, bosses his defence, knows where to position himself, comes out and catches or punches corners, reflexes like a cat and as brave as a lion.
Oh, 4/5 penalties saved this season as well, good job really as he’s given three away himself, the last one he actually admitted he done it on purpose as he was bored.
Strange bunch us keepers eh….🤣

He just reads the game and situations so well, it’s almost like he’s been here before!
He was invited up to our local league one club two seasons ago, after the third week of turning up and telling the coaches he didn’t fancy playing in goal that night I knocked it on the head, I just thought it was all a bit too much for him to take in especially at his age and the pressure that comes with it.
Might be a different story in a year or two but for now I’m just going to let him have a bit of fun with it all.

Yesh that's the jest way, my son was like that, played in all positions really, excelled as a keeper though, but was usually one of the better outfield players at rhat age, it's so young though, I remember how serious I was about it, 9 year old grass roots football...

Think I've probably learned more than my son lol

Good luck to him, all about game time isn’t it.
Just hope it’s local so you can go and watch!

It's Marlow, so not too far a go.

We shall see, it's his first go at men's foorball, hoping for a national league one (as he was offered national league in sept), but it's men's gametime, I'll go watch and see if he handles himself getting kicked around lol

Right how many of you have keeper kids? 🤣
If it's any consolation my son is awful in goal. The ADHD means that he needs to be constantly moving around the pitch.

So he plays up front which makes him a lazy defenders nightmare 😂

My lad had and has adhd, the goalkeeper one, he was on medication u till about 11/12 for it and I was worried about that'll part of it, bit worked out alright, it comes out differently now, usually with sporadic spending!

Just had a quick look and he’s definitely going to busy, great learning curve and some nice away fixtures as well.
Best of luck to him! 🤞

He was busy, very busy!

Lost 2 nil, probably made around 15/16 saves on top of that..which is a ridiculous high amount at any level!

No chance on goals but a proper good showing, great seeing him play men's football too!
